I have been collecting parts for a trap pedal build to compliment my FreekyGeeky aluminum trap while also researching the screen used trap and other makers’ builds. First off, I used the aluminum parts from the GBFans pedal base kit but replaced the wood with somd solid poplar. I did this for a couple reasons.

First, I was worried that the wood would split when I drilled out the hole for the lock mechanism. Second, to me, when I look at pictures of that section, it looks like the wood is split down the middle.

 ![1000024825](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/9/a/9a8571b86c9e85fe0a6a6ef1e0652cac85082236.jpeg)

Third, to me, based in the grain of the wood, it just looks more like solid wood, not plywood.

This was the trickiest part because I was basically working backwards to fit it to the existing aluminum but I think overall, it turned out pretty well. I had to compensate a little for the zigsaw blade when I split the wood. I added maybe one or two millimeters to the middle section. After cutting the two halves, I redrilled the hole for the lock mechanism then used wood glue to laminate the wood back together.

After getting everything squared away, I started attaching the project boxes and drilling out some holes but realized I didn’t have the correct tap for the 4mm [Legris](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/legris) straight. Tomorrow, I’ll hit the hardware store but as of today, here is where I am at.

Also, ignore that I have the foster connector on the wrong side… sheesh… it has been fixed.

So I, as stated, somehow managed to put the Foster connector on the wrong side… I drilled and tapped the correct box then filled in the incorrect hole with Bondo. I had some free time so I worked through some of the other sections including adding in the [arcolectric](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/arcolectric) lens. I need to pick up a tap for the [legris](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/legris) fitting, though. I was able to do some painting as well.

I have been collecting parts on this for ages so I dug up label and a dry rub from Charlesworth Dynamics.

Lots of work done on this. I went by a buddy’s house on Saturday night and used his dremmel to cut off all of the pins from the relay. After I got home, I used a file to knock down the rough edges and get it pretty flat so I coukd mount it to the project box.

Early Sunday morning, I drilled a hole into the project box that was tight enough to support the relay with just the peg. It’s actually pretty sturdy but I’m going to replace the project box because the erroe I made with the Foster connector is bugging me.

 ![1000026872](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/d/2/d256731776a42db9275912434c2fdc0766471c83.jpeg)

After a slight delay in the arrival of a new drill bit and tap, I finally was able to secure the resistor under the foot pedal. Now that I have the resistor locked down, I am able to epoxy the spring in place. When I look at reference pictures, I see globs of gray epoxy around the base of the spring.

 ![1000027078](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/0/2/02792fcc9cfa4fb5235f3bda4fe9964fecd1cfb5.jpeg)

I ended up using an uncomfortable amount of epoxy in this build, using it to secure the spring, the little black connector for the [ribbon cable](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/ribbon-cable), and the rubber feet. Eventually, I’ll epoxy the relay in place, too.

 ![1000027079](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/6/a/6a19d1b9f6701cc34d8635f087cfcf10e63e8a7e.jpeg)

I’m still trying to get the pedal to depress further. I used GhostLabs42’s foot pedal and hinge set but the bolts are really big, and get in the way. Maybe I can find something flatter?

I used as many vintage parts in this build as I could, including;

Red arolectric lens
[Legris](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/legris) 4mm banjo and banjo bolt
Legris 4mm knurled straight fitting
[D-Sub connector hood](https://www.gbfans.com/shop/d-sub-connector-hood)
24-pin edge connector
ITT relay
Spectra cable ribbon cable
1st generation yellow [NYCOIL](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/nycoil) tubing
2nd generation red NYCOIL tubing
15w [Pacific resistor](https://www.gbfans.com/shop/pacific-resistor)

I also tried to replicate some of the “cruchiness” of the original prop. For example, the ribbon cable feeds into the D-sub connector by wrapping around a small piece of wood and screwed in to it then shoved into the connector. I also made sure there was no red visible on the ribbon cable. I almost always see pedals with a light gray ribbon cable with a red wire on the top but I noticed looking at the reference pictures (thank you, Ghostbusters Reference Library) that it’s actually a darker gray ribbon cable without any visible red. I found some Spectra cable and modified it to be the correct 24 count cable and it has the slightly darker color. I also like that “Spectra” is visible from the inside. It’s subtle and probably not screen accurate, but I think it’s a fun connection to the GB2 [proton pack](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack).

If anyone has any feedback to make this build better, please feel free to share it.

Did a couple little, but important, updates to the pedal today.

For starters, I replaced the hinge because it was too small for an '84 pedal. This new one is a lot wider and the holes were not predrilled, either so I made sure they were spaced in such a way that they cleared each other when depressing the pedal. On the original hinge, the top and bottom sets of holes lined up with each other, so when I depressed the pedal, they would block the full motion. I now have a much better range of motion. I also changed the positioning of the hinge, as you can clearly see on the original that the hinge protruded beyond the pedal.

I also changed the lock mechanism to something much more accurate that I just got in today from the GBFans shop. This one has more of a cylindrical shape with just the very top being a dome compared to what I had previously.

I had been going back and forth on the connection method between the spring and the foot pedal. Searching the Reference Library, I could not find anything that indicated how they were connected. As I said previously, I believe the spring was epoxied to the pedal base board so I figured it might be the same to the foot pedal.

I noticed one detail that support it being epoxied in place:

 ![1000027350](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/b/8/b805ef454ff6479636477749e92e538d24c14ec4.jpeg)

The fact that the spring appears to have a bit of an inward curve to it. This, to me, suggests that there is something holding it at that curve. Other options, say like having a cable passing through, would keep the foot pedal in place, but I don’t think it would keep the spring in place. I decided to go ahead with the epoxy.

![1000027441](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/3/a/3a325affc4ac1eccbdfc230ee7cb042dd6c14a27.jpeg)Thia gives me the look I wanted: a slight curve to the spring while keeping it very secure.

I still have not epoxied the relay to the project box, as I am holding out hope for the correct 24-pin connector and I assume the screw holes would not line up exactly but in lieu of that, I think this pedal is mostly done.

The next phase is on!

Today brought some nice weather in Massachusetts. Perfect for some paint, so I figured let’s start pulling apart my FreekyGeeky aluminum trap and get it painted up!

 ![1000027553](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/0/0/0000066472d356d9f112d8c87d5d361045e2a8f5.jpeg)

I have never disassembled this trap, so I was gently concerned I wouldn’t be able to get it back together. I separated all the screws out into bowls, though. Then it was time to spray!

 ![1000027558](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/6/c/6cf2e163f1d819d715f9623b70b5b6bcc5a7893d.jpeg)

 ![1000027546](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/c/7/c72be9a18c22f05c1e2346f7210d4c5e1b882467.jpeg)

 ![1000027545](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/a/d/ad3798823a7d30482e693cc73c464cbda1e466ab.jpeg)

Most parts came out looking great but there were a few that needed some touching up.

 ![1000027549](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/e/7/e7fabd93d6011704f9e99ac79b1a003d4c400ba2.jpeg)

I did have a bit of an epic fail though. I was tapping in the pressure fit handle end cap and the weld on the handle ended up breaking off! While I know how to weld, I don’t have immediate access to one, especially a TIG welder so I mixed up some JB Weld (same as the stuff I used on the pedal) and tried to get it back in place as exact as I could.

 ![1000027550](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/4/c/4c0e416450ea2d3be44a90c571b583ce294117e9.jpeg)

Hopefully tomorrow, once it has cured, I can do a quick touch up on the paint and call it good.

Ok, I let the JB Weld cure and this morning, I did some touch up painting on the handle assembly. So, until FreekyGeeky completes the next phase, I’m calling this build… in a good place.

I wired up a simple blinking LED attached to the toggle switch. The toggle switch and the lens are the accurate vintage parts. I had to modify the lens’ socket by removing the original bulb and drilling out the socket to the 5mm LED would fit. I then had to open up the predrilled hole in the rear box cover for the socket to fit. Here’s a quick demo.
