Update for tuesday afternoon. I began my adventure into making a silicone mold of my pack. I have never done anything this size before and its kind of scary. Before this the only prop I have ever made was a Princess Leia Ceremonial necklace from Ep4 for my wife’s costume.

I am using this Smooth-On product…

This is the first coat. I plan on applying 3 coats. Hopefully thats all I need as this stuff is kind of expensive and no one in San Diego that I could find sells it in bulk.

hey where did u get that stuff luna? i live down in south bay so if you could help another gber in san diego county. does it come in gallons?

I got it at Blick Art Supplies. They are on Fig St in Little Italy. They only carry it in 2lbs kits, 1lb per part. The guy at the counter said that if you order it from their website that they have it in larger sizes. I will defiantly be doing that next time as it is $26 per 2lb kit.

So I have an update today, but its not a good one. I screwed up and didn’t put a seam in my fiberglass mother mold and I ended up ruining my silicone mold while taking it apart.

I had good lines and transfer in the silicone, here is what the power cell fins looked like:

As you can see here it was a clean tear around the top of the cosmetic piece under the booster tube mount:

Here is what is left of my silicone and fiberglass molds:

Of course there was damage to the buck as well, but nothing a little wood putty and some sanding can’t fix:

So now I have about $200 worth of trash on my back patio and a damaged buck. What did I learn you ask? Firstly I learned that its not as easy as it looks. Second, seek out help from people who know how to do it and see if they can lend a hand.

My deadline for this is halloween so luckily I have plenty of time.

I was going to give you a call today to ask about that very thing. I should have the buck repaired by tomorrow and be ready to go back at it this weekend.

Sad sight to see, a very nice build you have going on sir. I wish you the best of luck the next time around with it. That buck is going to make for a very nice shell.

Glad to hear that! I do plan to have my mold redone much sooner than later. My kid needs one by halloween for sure! Once I get my 50 posts and pay for my supporting membership I plan to start an interest list.

Ok so it coming up on a month since an update. So here it is. I had some free time with the wife and kid out this evening. During my last update I shared the bad news that my first attempt at mold making had damaged my buck. Well after some wood putty and some sanding I am happy to say that it is back on track. Here are some update pics.

I got everything to where I thought I liked it so I threw on a coat of primer to help spot the high and low spots as well as any other dings or dents:

What do ya know I found some. Some cracking in the original filled joints, I am gonna guess from all the handling, and some dings at the top of the cyclotron. Nothing big and easy fixes. I should be ready to repaint the buck in a couple days and will be ready to remold shortly after.

A bit of cool news is that Vincenzo330 of the bigi71 shells and mobo fame has offered to help me mold this bad boy. So the shells I plan to pull of it should be out standing. Be on the watch for an interest thread soon. I am almost to my 90 days on GBfans. My plan is to start making these right away so that they can be on the little GB’s backs by Halloween at the latest.

I know there hasn’t been an update recently, but I am just about ready to begin molding they shells. I have started and interest list over in the for sale section. If you are interested please post a comment saying so over there and hopefully I can get enough people to do a run.
