When I last posted I said I decided to do my cyclotron over again cause I rounded it instead of faceting the bottom. Here are a few photos of where I’m at now.
Started by drawing the piece in AutoCAD.
Failed attempt at drawing it of by hand. The math didn’t add up to well…damn you metric to imperial measurements !
Ploted the image out and glued it to the foam.
Used a band saw to get a nice straight cut. * GASP!* But John, You seemed to of made the sync gen backwards ! Have you gone mad??
Nope, just flipped it over so the paper pattern is on the bottom and I don’t have to worry about sanding it. Glued the cyclotron to the sync gen.
Cut out the hole for the N-filter which happened to be a huge b*tch. Note to anyone doing this. CUT THIS OUT FIRST ! Or at least make it one of the first things you do and save yourself the pain of trying to do it on a piece with rounded edges.
I decided to seal the foam with wood glue because A) I was too lazy to drive to Ace hardware and pick up the water putty. B) I wasn’t sure how water putty was gonna work and knowing my luck, the piece would of swelled and deformed. C) I’ve used wood glue before and it hasn’t failed me yet.
Last shot of the piece with 3 coats of wood glue. Now ready for primer and bondo. I also dry fitted the sync gen plates to see how they looked next to the piece.
Ugh this “Not being able to edit your posts 2 minutes after you post” is getting old. Anyways, I’ll hopefully post more later tonight as today I’m going to try and wrap up the last of my main fabrication. I hope my Irrican mobo get here soon. I really want that in hand before I start gluing things together.
It’s easy to get hold of for free legally they offer student versions to people who can prove to be valid students with student email address’s thats what a few of my friends have done
but if like us three you work with the program then getting a copy is easy.
I’ve been tempted to model it in 3D on cad since you can, saying that though i’ve only done rudimentary shapes, but i did do spot heights and elevations once for a planned building for a University project
Alkaline that looks awesome, i was going to cut the N-filter out separate too, but then worked out that if you have it stuck together its uber difficult.
You know for as many times as I’ve done the foam/wood glue combination I always hold my breath for the first coat of primer. I know it will be OK, but I’m still waiting for “That one time..” . I usually do 2 coats of the wood glue but did 3 this time so I made sure it was totally sealed. Even the tiniest bare spot could be disastrous. You can usually tell when the piece is nice and covered when the foam takes a nice, even, yellow tint. I’m most worried about the N-filter area cause I hacked the ■■■■ out of it and there were a bunch of nooks and crannies I had to try and get the glue into. We shall find out today if the glue was a good idea.
If you have AutoCAD I have the main body already modeled if you would like it. The only difference is the crank gen bottom fins are modeled to my style.
Because access to the information and data to create those plans has been very limited until recently…
Both obviuolsly we have Tupperware packs and we have people like me and John who are pushing the limits…
Because most people don’t care they simply take what is on the table and run with it as being ‘good enough’ And the people that do care and want to create that ultimate set of plans get ridiculed and told they have too much time on their hands…
As I have said much of the information and data to create better plans has not been available until recently that is why Stefan’s plans were never totally call into question, there has been speculations of issues in his plans for years but there was no way to confirm until recently, as they were pretty close as is, but that has now changed as there is clear visual and hands on data supporting inaccuracies…
I’m in the same boat as him, and it will happen but it’s been taken private for now as everyone involved in it is tired of the ridicule on the forums…
Ha, that’s actually not a bad idea. The problem I have with wood glue sometimes is that it likes to pool together and make tiny little holes in the finish. So you wind up with dozens of little bare spots you gotta keep going over with the brush till the glue dries. Doing 2 and 3 coats takes care of this though. I like using the yellow wood glue so it does have some color to it. When you start adding coats, its a bit easier to tell bare spots from covered. 3 coats of wood glue and its almost starting to look like resin in color.
No body should ridicule you for it, besides ignore them, i spent most of my teenage years worrying about what everyone else thought of what i did and looked like and it messed me up, let it go over your head and be proud of your accomplishments
That blows my mind why someone would ridicule a person ( or tell them to hurry up cause they bought their sh*t already ) for trying to give them the most accurate plans they could have. Oh and for FREE by the way. Oh well, such is the internets.
Sorry, I didn’t know that the new info wasn’t ready years ago. I meant that some people ridicule just to ridicule and have too much time on their hands. I have spent countless UNPAID hours on our fanfilm trying to make the best gear that I could for FREE, so I understand about putting in a lot of time on stuff for no obvious reward. Keep up the good work, but don’t do it for me–do it for yourself, Flynn. John, you are one lucky…person to be in a shopr with Autocad, foam, scrap parts and an understanding boss. It’s like Prop builder Heaven LOL. My son told me to “take a break” this Halloween and not build him a costume (although he has a proton pack and Burgh Pack on order : )
I don’t build my Burgh Packs or other fringe stuff to impress people (although some folks liking it is a plus).
Don’t release your plans until you think it’s ready. Anyone do any screen caps on the blu-ray yet? I got GB on bluray but don’t have a player LOL.
Too bad you don’t have a streaolithography machine. Pop the Autocad file a zip-zip-zip there is a perfect buck out of UV-cured plastic. Maybe not as fun as the one that you did by hand, though.
I know I really lucked out. Actually its funny you mention it cause the last place I worked at had a cnc wood router. Damn only if I was into this like 2 yrs ago a could of machined the whole thing in a day. hey if your looking for a cheaper BR alternative, buy a blu ray drive for pc. Just make sure your processor, ram, and video card can handle it.
Painted my wood glue covered cyclotron last night and no spots were eating away. Success ! Also managed to paint the power cell. I still need to clean up the fins a bit though. Another bonus my motherboard arrived from MMM yesterday too so I can finally begin to piece it all together. Will post later tonight.
