Hi all, well i couldnt resist it any longer so ive started having a go at building a pack even though i have a very small budget right now.
Can i just say a heart-felt thank you to all of you who have taken the time to post your builds, parts lists, plans, and any other related info. The amount of information available on this forum is mind boggling. Thanks guys. To say guys like me appreciate the time and effort taken in doing such a thing would be an understatement.
Im toying with adding some extra lights like on the game pack (were health and all that is) but we will see on that one. My dear old dad is an electronics tinkerer so im hoping when the time comes he can help me out a bit.
Tell ya what, its already proving fun keeping this safe from my son (who is also GB crazy) lol. Aaanyways, not much done today, got my motherboard cut out of a sheet of alu that i was planning to paint something on (im an airbrush/digital artist by day) and a couple of the spacers. Going for a bit of an unorthadox method for building this and its prob gonna end up weighing more than me but hey ■■, dont know unless you try do ya
Gotta get back to the day job tomorrow but more progress on this soon
Couldnt leave this alone today so got a bit more done. Thats the prob with being your own boss i suppose lol

Got another layer of wood cut to the right shape and glued all the bits i had together. She is starting to take shape. Ive ran out of wood though so a trip to homebase is in order.
That looks really cool, and the fiberboard will make crisp details without the filler required with MDF. I do wonder how you’re planning to cut the center out of your layers now that you have it glued together though…
Also started to make the power cell box but thats all ive had time to do. Had a word with my dad and showed him a you tube vid for what i wanted to do with the lights/sound and he said he could do that no worries which is awesome.
One thing i am wondering though, should i make a mold of my pack while im building it? From what i can see there arent any people over here in the UK doing pack shells. Not sure on it though, ive never made a mold of anything let alone something that big lol. Would help me in the future when i make a pack for my son too
Just a little update as work is keeping me pretty busy at the mo. Got started on the box that sits under the booster/ion arm and started on the details on the power cell. I really want to make this out of metal but i have no metalwork skills and no welder or anything like that so i decided to try some stuff called dibond. Its two thin bits of aluminum with some plastic in the middle and works out at 3mm thick.
Its great stuff to work with as you just score it with a knife and snap it. Easy. Its pretty damn tough too and not as heavy as wood/MDF.
Dont know to be honest mate. You must be able to get it over in your part of the world but dont know if they call it something different to us in the UK. Its for signs really but airbrush artists like myself use it for practice/display panels as its cheaper than practicing on a bike tank or helmet or something like that.
Gotta admit, im getting a little worried about the weight of this. I think my saving grace is going to be the dibond as it is pretty light. That bottom MDF section is a good weight on its own lol. More soooon
I agree, looks heavy, but gonna have good details. As I am putting a fiber glass one together, I am noticing the details are not as crisp as I am wanting. I am also concerned about its durability. Your wooden approach, addresses both those issues.
Our insulation foam parts have actully not been a problem issue at all.. its the parts that stick out that have been more the problems as far as damage is concerned.
The end of the ion arm, and bumpers have taken the worse beating, but most repairs have actually been on the guns.
