Anyone EVER produce a good GB2 uniform?

Alirght, so we know the age-old argument about the color of the GB2 uniforms ( it really does all depend on the lighting)…but has anyone been able to come close to making a charcoal/dark navy uniform? My thought has always been to buy a navy jumpsuit and dye it with a bit of black…just enough to darken it (much like the dye job on the khaki). Any thoughts?

And to prove my point about lighting, here’s screencaps and then on-set pics of the same uniforms; they look like different costumes, but they are not. True light versus Hollywood lighting makes a world of difference…I got these (onset pics; screencap original GBPA) from someone here or on ghostbustershq.com…I don’t remember who, but I am acknowledging the help.

These are good because the onset pics show how there is definitely some blue AND gray in the costumes, and all 3 have something to compare them to. In Dan’s, the inner layer of the guy’s red coat is a navy blue and similar to the uniform. Ivan is wearing blue in Harold’s, and the makeup lady has a light-gray sweater in Bill’s. The screencap makes it look like they are definitely in charcoal…all lighting…let’s crack the code and figure out the dye mixture/method.

It is really hard to tell, because of lighting. And the other thing to factor in is the fact they had more than one of those uniforms for each of the actors. So one set of uniforms could have ended up with more blue in it.

That being said. I bought a dark grey uniform from Gibson and Barnes. And I’m very happy with it the color it came from the factory. I posted a picture of it in this thread: My Uniforms - GBFans.com. The lighting in that picture distorts the color a little bit. In person, it looks pretty close to the uniforms they’re all wearing in that bottom picture you posted.

Very nice…I definitely would go with the gray one you have over a navy blue to get closer to the actual look of GB2. I also agree that this is hard to nail down because of multiple costumes for each actor…that is why I used pics of the same exact uniform to prove that anyone arguing for blue is technically right, and anyone arguing for charcoal is also equally correct.

Ya, there are so many variations and variables, it really boils down to personal preference and what you like the look of the most.

Be sure to post pics when you’re done.

I just noticed something else about the coloring of those pictures. Look at the coloring of the Santa hats in the behind the scenes pictures, compared what is on that screne grap. The screne grap is a lot more red.

In addition to our conversation about how things look different in lighting and the different uniforms that were used… I had heard a long time ago that there was some blue in those grey uniforms, never really noticed it until someone posted that behind the scenes pic of Dan Aykroyd… I swear if you look at the movie poster for GBII, it looks like those dark grey uniforms have some brown in them.

I agree there is a mystery tone in the there somewhere…I don’t know if it’s brown though. The best way to describe it for me is that they look like navy uniforms that have been washed MANY times to the point they have dulled down to a gray…or that it’s gray enhanced with a dye…I think it’s actually more a purplish “hue” that we’re picking up on…thus the “blue” and “brownish” we see…almost a purple color you’d see within a pearl. KIND OF LIKE THIS

I have a navy uniform and depending on the light it looks a lot like the GB2 uniforms

Case in point

And close up sans proton pack

Gotta admit looks pretty close

Wow! That does look very close. I think that just further proves our point that lighting and film be it a movie or still camera (I know those pictures were probably taken digital) will alter the way things look.

Nice uniform by the way!

Definitely a nice looking uniform…while the khakis are the classics and what people think of when they think of GB, the GB2 uniforms are so cool looking to me. After seeing DS’s pics, I would go back to my original idea of a navy uniform dyed with some black to add a darker tone that could come across as “charcoal”. I am really curious as to where these uniforms ended up…we’ve seen the khaki’s, the packs, traps, belts, slime “scooper”, hardhat, AND Ecto-1A, from GB2 all on display, but the charcoal uni’s have seem to have vanished…

EDIT: Ok, so we HAVE seen Ernie Hudson at conventions sporting his GB2 uniform…it’s comes off as looking more gray than anything, not even a charcoal.

Mine is dyed to be very very close, if not exactly like the GB2 uniform. Its not blue, it is charcoal, that has been confirmed by people who’ve seen Ernie wearing his and others who worked on GB2.

Cool uniform. And even with out the navy blue in it, it still looks very accurate.

There wasn’t navy in the movie.

Not in any of the uniforms?.. Okay I have a theory on that, since those still pictures (at the top of this thread) look like there is blue in them. Natural sun light causes things to look blue in pictures and movies, if a camera is not properly white balanced. If the camera those pictures were taken with was not properly white balanced that could cause them to have that blue look… But I don’t know, because the other objects in those pictures don’t look blue. But those uniforms definitely look like they have a touch.

Like I said, its been confirmed by people who’ve seen Ernie’s uniform and people who have worked on the set that they were grey. This is just like the Khaki vs. Grey arguement for GB1. What appears on screen is not always how it actually is.

Oh ya, I’m not arguing with you… That’s why I brought up the white balance thing in those outdoor still shots. That could cause them to appear blue, even when they’re not.

Ok, I know this thread is a bit old but I thought I would share some things with the group. I’ve been doing a bit of research regarding the GB2 uniform color. I’m going to go with a charcoal gray color since those who have seen Ernie’s uniform in person have confirmed that it is a charcoal grey. However, there have been those who swear a few of the shots show the Ghostbusters in blue. A few minutes in Photoshop cleared this issue up for me. By no means are these extensive alterations. I emphasized one or two colors in the mix and came up with the grey uniforms. Ok, enough talking… here are the shots:

Same picture with some added colors. Note that the colors of the surrounding objects have changed a bit but are not way off. I.E. Santa hat is still red and white. Skin tones are still within range. Uniform is grey but collar on red jacket is still blue.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Im going to get myself together a GB2 style darker uniform but trying to decide where to get it from, might go to where i got my GB1 style from (Armysurplusforless.com) im tempted to go to Flightsuits.com but dont fancy paying that much just for a jump suit even though they look spot on & very accurate :sigh:

heres one i made about 5 years ago i used a black suit and bleached it till it was venkman rgb brown. Then dyed it in a bucket with 2 boxs of perpule and 3 boxs of navy one box of black let soak for 3 days came out perfect when you look at it seems dark grey but when light hits it .it has a purple /blue halo to it came out great.i did just do one with the charcoal suit dyed with part of a box of purple and charcoal grey ill take a pic in a few days but heres my old suit image
