Batfly's Uniform Upgrade: Rothco piss to Nomex

Thanks a bunch! Yeah, I’m trying to show the suit, not me lol.

Alright, update time! On Saturday I had a day off so I wanted to finish up the suit. I put the suit on with an elbow pad on my right arm. I played the where-does-this-look-best in the mirror game. I took some gaff tape and tapped it in place.

I then carefully took off the suit and put the embroidery hoop on the sleeve.

I sewed on all the red thread areas starting at the top left edge next to his head. Finished ask the read areas when the girlfriend came home from work and spent time with her.

I was going to finish up the black thread parts Saturday, but the Orlando Pulse shooting happened. I grew up in Orlando till the age of 30 and had been to Pulse multiple times. This hit me pretty hard and I was in a funk all day. #OrlandoStrong ! [emoji25]

Last night, however, I did finish it up after work. But first, some things were waiting in the mail box.

Two things that came in you’ll have to head over to my pack build thread to see. [emoji14] Link is in my signature.

The other things were our Ghostbusters shirts. Mine glows in the dark. Hers isn’t as she’s tiny and they didn’t have a glowy one in her size. She got a women’s junior small. Lol. If we have off in the 26th we plan on matching with the Windy City Ghostbusters in the pride parade. I’ll wear my suit without pack and she’ll have her GB shirt on. She loves it and wore it all last night LOL.

Back to the suit:

I accidentally found out I could see through the fabric to find the edges to aid in needle placement. A bit late, lol, but better than never.

All finished up!

Without embroidery ring.

And while wearing. I love it! The Nomex upgrade was extremely worth it! It’s so beautiful.

Gah, I’m losing my mind! In a good way. I’m off work for about an hour when the lady calls. Two people called off so she’s closing now. I have the afternoon/evening to myself. I look up a store and see they are closing in an hour. I jump in my car to get something I was going to wait till tomorrow, my day off, for. Couldn’t wait though. Here’s a hint:

Yep!

Got my mofuggin boots! Was looking for 995’s, but they only had XC1585’s. They looked close if not identical, so I tried some on. In wide, my usual size fit perfect! I have really flat wide feet. These things are very comfy and not even broken in at all!

So I purchase them somewhat excited even though they weren’t the model number I was looking for. Before I even leave my parking spot, I plug my phone charger in (why I didn’t look it up in the store, was almost dead) and look up “1585 boots site:gbfans.com” waiting to read some slight reason leading to buyers remorse. Low and behold these suckers are just the newer improveder model. The only difference seems to be newer lighter outer sole material and black stitching. They went from rubber to something-urethane (it’s single density poly, I know, just laugh please (Jeb Bush, heh)).

Gah, other than what I spent, I’m overjoyed!

I like that I supported local business and got to try on several pairs. These things are great. Can’t wait to break them in.

Man did you just walk off set?!? Looks awesome

Lol, thanks VS. You really know how to talk to a ghosthead!

I’ve been wearing the new boots a lot to break them in. They are so comfy even while still stiff.

I’ve since scraped off the black paint on the zippers and pulls. Did the right boot last night and the other I just finished. Before that I’ve been wearing them since 9:30am lol.

Before…

…after.

I used 240 grit paper on the the zipper teeth.

On the pulls I used two foam sanding sticks to get as far into the recesses and sides as possible.

When the end would wear down, I’d just snip it off.

I just love how they look! Uh! And I thought they were sexy when I first got them.

Hahaha you’re welcome and thanks man. The boot update rocks

There’s just something about new Corcorans that brings a tear to my eye… sniff

Got mine last month and have been breaking them in every day. They’re finally to the point of being comfy.

Right TK?! I’m actually wearing mine to work today to help break them in. LOL

I read on a few military forums on the best way to break these in. They said you don’t break in the Corcorans, they break your feet in. I still have a few healing blisters on my heels.

I used to wear motorcycle boots nearly 24/7 way back in my gothy days. Here’s some break in techniques I find help.

I roll the top inch or so of the heel in and down several times.

Then I push in the side of the same area several times.

I repeat switching from the the two positions several times until I get bored of it.

I will push the whole top area from right to left for multiple repetitions.

Finally, I’ll take one had and push out from the inside and the other from the outside. I alternate each hand up and down positions several times.

I might mix it up after the first run. It’s good to do this while watching a movie. Ghostbusters 1 &/or 2 is a suggestion.

Nothing is a proper substitute for actual foot toughening wear, but these help keep blisters away mostly. If heel gets raw, wash it, dry it (no sweat) and put a 2x2 inch square of duct tape on your heel. Right on the skin under the sock(s). This can be done for preventative measures as well.

Mink oil. Does wonders.

I wore my boots for about 12 hours just around and found the spots that were sore on my foot or rubbing. Then I smeared some mink oil on those spots and left it for 24 hours. Then I covered all the leather in mink oil and left it for 24 hours. After that wipe of all the mink oil. Now these are my most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned.

Remember to take out the laces before the mink oil though.

I’ve heard about this mink oil a few times in these forums. Might have to pick some up. Is it an online only type of purchase or is their local ish vendors I could grab it from?

I think I got mine from Walmart or something like that. Worst case I’m sure Amazon has it.

Today is the third day I’ve worn my new Corcoran’s to work and the fifth day total wearing them. Most of the time I don’t even realize I’m wearing boots now! They are breaking in splendidly. I had some soreness on the heels the first 2 days. I do a lot of physical activity at work as an Audio Visual Technician. They are getting good use and some nice natural weathering, lol. Loving these! If I keep wearing them to work I can expense them to the company!!! WOOOO!

Good thing too, cuz these aren’t cheap.

I also removed the snaps and snap cover from mine. Kinda nice to just zip up and go.

Two nights ago I rushed after work to make up these belt fobs per Alan’s awesome Budget Fob Tutorial thread!

The parts. Only about $25 spent.

I ended up buying the wrong tool to install the snaps. Who would have thought the product labeled “Heavy Duty Snap Tools” wouldn’t work on a product called “Heavy Duty Snaps”?! Apparently there were different types of heavy duty snaps with different numbers. Then don’t put this right next to the wrong product and not even the same row as the correct product.

Oh well, still made it work, but not able to get it to work through both layers of nylon.

So I affixed the snaps to the front flap. Then sewed the flaps together above and below the snap.

Extremely pleased with how these came out! Thanks Alan for your tutorial!

On the belt.

On me. Just before…

…I attended my first event with The Windy City Ghostbusters in the Chicago Pride Parade yesterday! What a day! Great group of busters. Can’t wait for my next events and after my third to be an official member!

I lost a glove, but will be upgrading to live wire linemen gloves instead of chemical gloves, woo!
