I have seen on a few builds people have an Allen hex head bolt on the side of the thrower between to side discs/knobs.

What is this bolt used for. Is it ment to be here as I got find a clear enough pic showing it on a screen pack.

This is a pic from one of the builds in the index section showing the bolt

It’s never been determined what that center bolt is for. It may be used to mount the lights inside the thrower, but it’s really anyone’s guess.

Seems to me i saw an aluminum thrower build where that bolt was used to hold a bracket for the barrel extension. Perhaps that was the intended function on the screen used as well.

That’s what I’ve done, and it seems one of the most logical reasons for a bolt that low on that side…

That may be a logical idea, however the barrel was confirmed to be spring loaded on the actual throwers and the lever only releases the barrel when pulled. The theory is that the barrel and lever are both spring loaded. The lever, when pulled, releases the barrel and the lever automatically resets in the up position. The barrel is then manually pushed back in via the [trigger tip](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/trigger-tip) and the system is set again for use. I have a working spring system in my aluminum thrower that works just as I described and is believed by many to be the actual way the screen used props worked. It is not a push/pull lever system as shown above. It may work, but it is not accurate. Also, that bolt is opposite of the barrel side of the body, which makes it more difficult to rig up. Do what you want since it is your build, I just thought I would help you out with your question and give you a heads up. At some point I will have to make an in depth “How to” thread to help everyone out.

There was a confirmation it was spring loaded? Where was this posted?

indeed, where is this thread??

if it’s theory and believed to be, it doesnt sound like it’s been confirmed, just a believed to be method. the inside of a hero thrower has never been seen, atleast by anyone on the forum that i’m aware of. also there is the video from the making of ghostbusters feature on the dvd that shows the barrel extend slowly which, unless it was sticking, wouldn’t be possible if it was springloaded.

also, if you look again at the cyland props setup, you’ll notice that the prototype is upside down in which case would make using that bolt for that setup very feasible, which is what we are talking about anyways…that bolt…

i do not mean to “attack” you or or imply you are a “liar”, the problem with any forums is writing can be taken in almost any context you want because you dont know what feelings went behind them because it’s only text. i’m simply rebutting with what i know, what i got from reading your post, and i’m hoping i missed something huge and get directed to a post confirming 100% how the barrel mechanisim works.

No offense taken, but since you asked, the info can be verified here by Vincenzo330 who had the hands on experience at Sony with the actual hero thrower.

Here is the quote as well.

> The main barrel itself was bent and barely twisted and the inner tube no longer popped. But here’s what I can tell you, the green lever is always in the “up” position, there is an internal spring that keeps it that way. In other words, you pull the lever down, the tube pops and the lever returns up instantly. Also, the rotation of the barrel is independent from the tube popping, one does not control the other.

There is another thread that I can’t find at the moment where we discuss the purpose of the [trigger tip](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/trigger-tip). The design of the trigger tip is to pull the barrel back in to reset everything.

Hope this helps guys. 🙂

Wow! Thanks man. Now I gotta do a whole bunch of tearing apart and rebuilding. Damn… So now I’m really wondering what the hell that bolt is for… Also, I would really appreciate that “how to” thread your thinking of starting…

Thanks for posting that, it’s been a while since I last read Vince’s experiences on handling the Pack.

That being said, I’m not going to bother spring loading mine… I remember how one fan’s clear barrel exploded after they initiated their spring-loaded system.

The bolt is missing on the Sony Lobby thrower. If it is actually related to the spring-loaded mechanism, perhaps something was broken on the inside and thus why the clear tube wouldn’t properly extend (in addition to the barrel being bent).
