Chatroom quotes in signatures

See - this is the type of thing that riles my nerves. There is only one assumption that can/should be made, and that is because I would have edited several signatures at this point - that I am not ok with it. That is my opinion.

Your conclusion that Mods look the other way is a unqualified assumption. If we have no means of correcting the problem, then we are not simply looking the other way.

It is not an ethical matter, you should likely invest some time into looking up ethics before you make such a broad claim. It seems to be a contradiction, however, which is the more appropriate term to use. I believe the official rules and terms of service indicate we can use language that was used in Ghostbusters, and also requires registrants to be of 13 years of age or older. That implies a PG-13 standard not a PG standard. And using language found in the movie, you can get away with talking about a wide array of things.

That said, if I could edit signatures I would.

WOAH. Hold up just one second here. Time to grow up? Are you kidding me? You call me a f**kwit like a 12 year old kid(if even that old) and you tell me to grow up? Hypocrisy at its finest. Gotta love it.

You’re pretty much the first person to lodge a complaint about it, Rich.

I side with Ron in this matter, that if the option were there then I would be keeping track of signature content like he would… but unfortunately it’s a luxury that’s not afforded to us.

You could consult AJ directly, as there’s no higher authority than he.

Signatures are censored just like any other text on the site. Key swear words are filtered out that are deemed offensive.

I actually never look at signatures (unless there is a big annoying graphic). So I’m not sure what exactly you are referring to.

Unfortuately GBFans’ Moderators are already given full access to all available features. Editing user’s profile just isn’t an option.

I have ONE “bad” word in my sig…its dick. That’s it. People take things too damn seriously these days.

IMHO, its about using comon sense. If the site is supposed to be kid freindly, then off color sig users should get a warning, and if they do not comply, a temp ban handslap.

The site has grown immensely, and could easily be added to all those kid freindly banning bots. Even commerce here can be restricted, by credit card companies pulling the ability to be used here.

Many credit card companies already have web restrictions in place, and I’d hate to see the store here loose it’s ability to sell, or for the site to not even be seen, because a few guys want to push the envelope on what can be used.

There has been a HUGE conservative push in the web commerce arena the past few years, and major players have restricted more and more what can and cannot be posted, because people just pushed barriers so often the sites were chastized as a result.

There is no GOOD reason why regular members here that give a rat’s @$$ about the site would push barriers or other people’s buttons like this.

If they do, it’ll just be a matter of time before outside forces come into play, and the mods anbd admin will HAVE to put stricter rules into place as a result.

I’ve seen it happen a quite a number of websites in the past few years, and as the community here becomes more and more under the public eye, the members will either have to police themselves, or at the end of the day, will force the website to become stricter.

Freinds shouldn’t be doing that to freinds, and screwing it up for everyone because they feel like being a smart @$$.

I’m not a smartass because I feel like being one. It just happens with me

The present rules allow for the use of language found in the first two Ghostbusters films: dick in included in that.

Trust me, folks, kids younger than 14 are using words far worse than what’s in the signatures.

Actually, by the net laws currently in place, some of those signatures could be considered slander or libel, and people could actually be sued and actually loose.

You cannot just post whatever you want about someone publically, even iof its a private joke anymore.. at least not in public places.

And its not just specific words that are covered by law, but the implication of sexual acts as well. Ron should know this.

oh boy…here comes perry mason…way to go gareee!

Was this topic even necessary? Some people need a break from the internet and need to feel real sunlight.

THANK YOU

I have personally seen 2nd graders cussing each other out and giving each other the finger. Right in front of the teacher. Now the teacher was occupied and didn’t notice it because she was my old 3rd grade teacher and I hadn’t seen her in a long time. So she didn’t see it. I did. There is nothing on this site or in these sigs that is new to kids these days. They aren’t the same as when we were little.

And no Krenzy, this topic wasn’t necessary. Some people are just too uptight about everything.

When a person actually says it, and you merely reproduce it - you are protected from liability for defamation - as a matter of law. Plus they have to show actual damages.

That’s what I was wondering. How can it be slander or anything like that if the person quoted actually said it.

So true. A local high school recently had a middle school student call a teacher a “Fuc|<ing B|tch” to her face in front of the whole class…this got attention as he was a hockey player, and was forced to sit out a game.

Matt, its a matter of using common sense.

Say a 10 year old kid loves ghostbusters, and starts browsing the site.. and his parents see your sig file post. Do you think they will let him back here again?

The site isn’t for people that have been here for ages.. its for anyone who has a fondness for the subject, and with the massive growth the site has had in the last year, the old timers are outnumbered 10 to 1 easily by all the new people.

Many however will leave, if they deem the site inappropriate, and too off color for themselves.

Public condict isn;t much different then if you were in someone’s house, with their kids standing right next to you. You KNOW you’d be more concious of what you would say in that situation, and in public forums, the same conduct should really be obser ved, because they ARE repercussions now on websites that don’t follow more common sense rules.

I belong to a few HUGE graphic forums, Daz3d, Renderosity, and CGtalk. Because of outside pressure all, those sites now have MUCH stricter forum rules then they had in the past. Anything off color is immediately deleted by the mods, and anyone violating policy gets a warning, and reasonable time to comply.. and if they don’t their simply loose thier accounts, period now.

In some cases, they get a new account, after showing just cause for their lack of following commone sense posting rules, but in many cases, offenders just end up with a IP block, because the site has to.

If they play favorites who violate rules, then the site itself can actually be sued for damages for people claiming prejudiced treatment.

The web isn’t a big western shoot em up frontier any more, where you can do whatever you want, and say whatever you want. The thing is the website itself will suffer the concequences, and when they have to impose stricter posting guidelines, then the community as well will also suffer.

I understand that Moderators can’t edit people’s profiles and nor should they have to. As Garee said it’s more about common sense. Yes I know we can use profanity that was used in the films, I say worse things than that everyday at work, I’d just like to see a little more restraint used in the forum, and a little less arrogance. I don’t really care what goes on in the chatroom but I know I don’t wanna see all the lowlights from it on someone’s signature when I’m reading the posts. That’s pretty much all I can say on it.

Thanks everyone for your input on the subject.

There’s a simple solution to this: Don’t read peoples sigs

The counter argument, and the slippery slope you make with this argument, is when you have an issue with a post - simply don’t read it.
