Electronics help

True enough - I guess the point is: what do you want out of your pack?

If you just want a cool replica - that’s fine, and great in fact. Really the “just” is a bit mean there…

I want the pack to be able to do something, and as shooting plasma streams is somewhat impractical and dangerous (not impossible though!) I’ll settle with this.

Anyhow - I was only playing around - I know it’s overkill, but equally it’s about the same price point. Cheaper even than Hyperdynes kits. Exorays is cheaper still however. I quite like the bang for buck ratio, and like you said: cool wearable computer project

As I’m the one having these heat sinks machined from Namebrands files let me make note that believe it or not this stuff is costlier then hell to have made, the only reason I can offer the heat sinks for under $200 is because they are being done “after hours” as a favor to me… Meaning I’m not paying regular shop fees, only for material and the machinist time… The price is ridicules and all for what it is I agree fully, but that is what it cost for custom small volume machined runs on high tech equipment… BTW Each heat sink takes over an hour from start to finish on a machine, that has a going rate of $200/hr to run… I sent the files to another machine shop just to verify price and they wanted to charge me $500 setup and $150 a piece with a minimum order of 50 completely outrageous but that is the quote I got back… The heat sink is an incredibly hard piece to machine (at least the correct profile) and when accuracy matters you will just have to pay…

As for electronics overkill I would pretty much agree that a single board computer is a little overkill for flashing lights and sorts, but if it works for you then all the power… And it will provide a lot of overhead if you desire to do something more… And honestly with the price of “computers” sometimes is just easier, simpler and more cost effective to use them then design a proprietary circuit…

Anyway enough rambling I’m off to bed as I just drove 16 hours home…

Oh don’t get me wrong Exoray - I love that those heatsink are around! I applaud every effort to reproduce that kind of detail.

I wasn’t putting that effort down at all - I’d never do that!

I was just making the point that “overkill”, given what everyone does here for GB related stuff, is a relative term. Almost everything we do is overkill to most other people… thats kind of the point. We’re a little nuts
