Incandescent Powercell Lights from GB2 Semi-Hero

For awhile now, several members have been on a quest to run incandescent lamps in their packs, instead of LEDs. With the reference from Ken’s pack in this thread, the discussion evolved into running the lamps using this circuit. That then turned into “if we’re going to use the correct circuit, why don’t we wire wrap it and get it as original as possible?”

As it turns out, amongst these members, I’m the only one with the tools and (slight) experience to do wire wrap. I identified the parts needed:

ULN2004, 4015, 4047 chips

Capacitor and Potentiometer

Wire wrap sockets

Wire wrap socket tags

Bulb sockets (these are the replacements for the originals, which are near impossible to find)

7328-type bulbs

Perfboard (the salmon colored boards are a material that hasn’t been used for years and is difficult to find)

I started with the strip of 15 lamp sockets. I cut down the correct size strip of perfboard and glued it to a second piece of perfboard, cut to size. Now, I tinned and soldered a length of stripped wire to the common pin on the sockets (this is VCC, or positive power). Some wire wrap gave me the following (I used solder on each of the lamp socket wire wrap joints, as it appears in the reference photos):

Now came the fun (and frustrating part) of deciphering the driving circuit. Knowing how 4047 and 4015 chips function was a boon, but layout still had issues, most notably the lack of a good power supply. Each lamp is rated for 200mA at 6V, and the circuit itself draws additional voltage and current. Off-the-shelf batteries that can be used to drive LED circuits don’t allow for the 3A of power this circuit ideally needs. Using an old ATX power supply, I was able to supply the circuit with 5V and plenty of current. Since lamps care more about amperage than voltage to light well, and CMOS chips are 5V, this worked very well, as you can see here:

The issue I found with this circuit is, it’s upside-down. After looking at it closely, there is no way the circuit can’t NOT be upside-down, given the outputs of the 4015 chips. After looking through Ken’s thread, I noticed that the lights were all apparently set to be static, and one of the 4015s on the powercell appeared to be broken, which explains why no one to date has seen this behavior.

Since the goal is to use these circuits in packs, I’m going to simply invert the wiring from the 4015s, which is probably what they did in GB2 for the other semi-hero pack electronics, and this one was left intact. Since most of these packs are seen in pairs, rather than all four in one scene, there would be no benefit to making another circuit or fixing this one.

Next step; hours of wire wrapping.

This brings replication to a new level where we can not only identify the insides but the insides as well.

LEDs are very practical for many reasons but the incandescents really do it for me.

Even warm LEDs don’t have the same effect as incandescents; LEDs are very abrupt on/off, but lamps have a slight fade on/off.

These do look magical.

Reminds me of the MN PH pack going up and down.

I have the same lights in a old hyperdyne board I got years ago, but I took it out and put it away in a safe place since its hard to find now. And now just use LEDs

So after a few setbacks, notably the circuit acting incorrectly, but inconsistently, I tore out the wiring in the 4015s. The 4047 was behaving correctly, as were the Darlington transistor arrays, so those were left as is.

After re-wrapping, I have the following:

All I need to do to finish this board is to add the two KlipWrap terminals where the power wires connect. I currently just have some header pins in place.

I’ve been testing this circuit with a 5V source from a hacked ATX power supply, but in practice, they will be driven by two 9.6 Makita batteries in parallel. I tested the circuit out when it was still on the breadboard with one of Mr. Burkit’s to test the brightness, and, well, check it out:

For comparison, those are the same lamps in the same room with the same lighting conditions (give or take). And you thought your cute little LEDs were blinding…

That said, it seems that your run-of-the-mill blue acrylic isn’t blue enough with the warm yellow, so I suppose we’re going back to lighting gels.

Very impressive… I need to educate myself a little further on electronics… this sort of project is facinating to me.

Time to start cutting out perfboard for another one. I should roughly time myself and see how long it takes to make one.

Okay, so after making my second one of these for The Burkit (and having to weave in resistors so you can’t see them), I made a third for noslliT. This time, instead of using the newer perfboard from Radio Shack which has wavy hole patterns, I found so new old stock at my local store. It’s still not the salmon colored board, but that stuff is next to impossible to find; I assume it causes cancer in California.

I almost lost my temper when I couldn’t get the thing working, but swapping out the 4015s solved all the issues, and here you go!

The bulbs alone there are like a buck each, lol.

You know as well as i do…people would pay top dollar for a set up like that if you got a full pack rig together…I’m pretty sure i personally wouldn’t be able to afford it…but I’m just a bumpkin…po dunk contractor… there are many others out there with far more money to throw at their projects. Regardless that is sick work…and i cant wait to see the rest of the pack lights coming to life.

I’d love to get the parts and put it together myself!
