That’s why I collected the toys, and still own most if not all of them. Watched the cartoon every chance I could, and was actually introduced to Ghostbusters via the Cartoon.
God forbid I just don’t find the world of Real Ghostbusters to flow well with the movies.
People don’t seem to understand that it’s okay to like non canon sources or universes. Comic book fans have been doing it for years why can’t we?
Now stop taking it as an attack, it’s just a statement, Real Ghostbusters is not canon to Ghostbusters I or II.
It is true that the worlds of the Movies and RGB/EGB can fit together rather nicely as we have seen but it’s also true that they ARE two very different mediums. While being an awesome cartoon, appealing to older audiences, and being way ahead of it’s time … it’s still a cartoon which WAS aimed toward younger audiences while the movies (well the first one anyway) were much more mature.
Personally I love everything about Ghostbusters … and I mean everything. RGB and EGB were my favorite cartoons growing up. But when I write my GB fan fiction I prefer to stay within the bounds that the movies created, that’s not to say that my stories aren’t influenced somewhat by RGB and EGB, but I also made my own canon to fit my ideas (I created my own Ghost Classification system based on what the movies labelled Slimer and the Library Ghost)
The thing about that is you actually can’t write fan fiction if you only take the movies to be canon because in the movies, there are only ghosts in New York when something big is about to go down that causes the PKE in the city to rise.

the Librarian, Slimer, etc. only manifested because of the coming of Gozer. Without the Shandor Building or the River of Slime, ghosts would be what we have in the real world, unprovable rumors of cold spots and blurry white things in photos. Nobody would hire a pest control service to remove that. The guys could never go into or stay in business. They’d never be called and go broke.
They can keep making video games and movies because they can keep inventing world crises. But you can’t write the day to day operations of a ghost removal company in a world where there’s only ghosts once every couple years.
That’s what Dan AKA’s “pseudo realistic world” is worth, a big fat pink slip.
You might get away with one or two Venkman/Stantz/Spengler/Zeddemore stories, total, but don’t even think about franchising in that world.
Besides, who are you writing for? There’s only two audiences for Ghostbusters fan fics: the girls who write out their sexual fantasies at fanfiction.net and the people who follow the Omnibus Timeline (and some of Fritz’s friends fit the first category too). Nobody else reads fan fiction anymore. The days of one healthy and frequently trafficked center for GB stories died when Chad closed the original GBN.
No. You are right. I agree with you. I never said I was only considering the movies to be canon. What I said was that I “prefer to stay within the bounds that the movie created”
What i mean when i say that is that none of my characters are gonna’ be flying around in the Ghostbusters Helicopter thing … i honestly am kicking myself for forgetting it’s name, i use the likeness of the equipment used in the movies, no one uses huge unrealistic guns, no one changes to a ghost-like state because of a malfunctioning gun.
I write for my friends. It’s a hobby more than anything else. I don’t even think I’m all that great at all. I write a bunch of stories all the time (most of which I never finish and the ones i do finish are filled with tons of grammer errors) but my friends love reading them (don’t ask me why). My best friend (who i introduced Ghostbusters, movies, cartoons, and all to) asked me a few weeks ago “Hey, J? How come you’ve never written a Ghostbusters story before?” i told him that Ghostbusters already had a bunch of fan fictions writers who were better than me. Plus ive been a fan of the Omnibus Timeline for a while and since i didn’t have my own GBI franchise or want to even try to barge my way into that world that was created so well i didnt give it much thought. But he insisted and I wrote a really short story. He liked it and I have to admit i liked writing it so i wrote a longer story followed by a second. Like i said, I’m not writing for the majority of Ghostbusters fans so i wanted to steer away from the information that was already given and create my own canon for my stories. So far only my family, friends, and coworkers have read any of my work. I don’t post it anywhere because i dont expect it to be accepted because it shouldnt be accepted.
The only reason i mention it at all is to point out that everyone has their own opinion. What is canon to some isn’t canon to others. I agree with you RGB should be considered canon, at least to some extent, because it is a part of the Ghostbusters Universe. But not everyone is gonna’ agree with that and if you try to make everyone accept that … you’re in a losing battle. People are stubborn.
And you can consider the cartoons in general canon without believing every single silly, nonsense episode is canon. And you don’t have to believe Egon has blonde hair and a turquoise and pink flightsuit.
Even though all my work is part of the Omnibus timeline, I still draw the proton packs the way they look in the films, rather than the dark blue animated ones with the pointy nozzles on the guns.
All that stuff is just artistic interpretation. I see the events of RGB and EGB as a guideline, not a rule. There’s nothing wrong with saying “Eduardo, Kylie, Roland, and Garrett happened, but Crimebusters makes no damn sense, so it didn’t.”
I’m quite aware of how the Ghosts work in the movie universe. It’s why they SHUT DOWN between Ghostbusters I and II. It was only with New York’s negative energy and the comming of Vigo that brought about the second wave of Ghosts.
From what we’ve gathered from the new video game, after the second outbreak the ghosts were here to stay, and if confined to New York, then yes, that’s the canon source and there is no opportunity for franchises.
The general idea of Ghostbusters International is a expanded universe cocept, put down by West End Games. Yeah, sure, Venkman mention franchise rights, but it’s never mentioned again. Hell the second edition of the Ghostbusters RPG is called Ghostbusters International, and gives an explanation as to why hosts inhabit the world now.
But in the end, it’s not 100% cannon.
