I don’t usually get involved in these kinds of discussions but there’s one angle no one thougt of.
The slime had inherent supernatural powers and when it animated an object the laws of physics were tossed right out the window. Look at how the tub bends and folds and twists around. Had the slime gotten Oscar I’m sure it could have easily sucked him into the drain expanding the walls of the plumbing to accomodate the size of the baby with no problem allowing Vigo to aquire his prize unharmed.
Well there was originally more to that scene in the first cut of the movie where the tub actaully chased Dana and Oscar out of the apartment, which entails that the tub could move about freely, so I assume the slime creature in the tub would have grabbed him and taken him to the museum for Vigo.

Well, by the sound it made the bathtub seemed to be made of metal. [I’m watching it right now, I watch it everynight haha] the bends but not in some abnormal way or anything. The monster was simply pulling the tub with it.
- Side note: When the Scoleri brothers come out during the court scene it shows our heros under the table and a piece of paper flys into Murrays face and just stays there before it switchs scenes. Well, I thought it to be funny anyway xD
I think it would have defeated the purpose of that “psychic” predicting that the world was gonna end on New Year’s Eve at the beginning of the movie.
If the slime was gonna try to get the baby, why wouldn’t of it just waited till they were asleep er something. Not very bright slime. lol
I’m going to assume that, since Vigo was desperate for a host, he was being oppurtunistic. If you had one chance for resurection (and you were a maniacal madman) would you not attack when your opponent’s most vulnerable (ie. when he’s going to be put in a bath tub, which you have full access to)? I think it makes sense. I really don’t think Vigo would have wanted to wait, because then, if his last ditch attempt failed, he’d be kind of screwed. It’d be like having one shot left in a gun, and fifteen full containers in a paintball competition. You’re not going to wait until your time’s almost up, and hinge the whole thing on that one shot. You’d want to make as many attempts as possible. If your one shot misses, you’d still have 15 other containers full to try if you’d still had time.
As for attacking while they’re asleep, that may not have worked very well. The slime is psychomagnotheric. It doesn’t have eyes, so it can’t simply look at it’s prey. My guess is that it senses where emotions are coming from. When they were asleep, unless they were having a dream, it couldn’t really pick up on any emotions.
Also, it’s slime. How smart do you want it to be?

INT. DANA’S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Dana brings Oscar into the bathroom and lays him on the bassinet. She’s
wearing a robe over her nightgown, preparing to bathe the baby. She
turns the taps on the old claw-footed bathtub, checks the water
temperature, then turns away and starts to undress the baby.
DANA
(talking sweetly to the
baby)
Look at you. I think we got more food on
your shirt than we got in your mouth.
BATHTUB
The water pouring from the faucet changes to slime and settles at the
bottom of the tub. Dana reaches over and turns off the water without
looking into the tub. When she turns away, both taps start to spin by
themselves and the tub flexes and bulges.
DANA
Still unaware, she routinely reaches over and squirts some bubble bath
into the tub.
BATHTUB
The rim of the tub puckers up and the sides convulse as if swallowing the
bubble bath.
DANA
She picks the baby up off the bassinet and turns to place him in the tub.
She is just about to lower him into the water when the tub starts to
close up around the baby like a hugh mouth. Dana screams, snatches the
baby away and runs from the room clutching Oscar to her bosom as the
bathtub convulses and vomits up buckets of slime.
