I used Mold builder to make my kid sized [proton packs](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack) and I wish I had sprung for silicone. I polished my buck to a sheen but then when I pulled off the mold builder the mold streaches a bit and then when it goes back it has streach marks like human skin. Then all the casts have that same weird texture. If you really care about the surface use silicone. Also you have to build up mold builder in thin layers and dry it completely between layers it takes forever.

I guess that is a no.

Usually 3-5 gallons of silicone is required.. which amounts to something like $400+.

I suggest reading this..

There is no cheap way to do anything that looks good.. just FYI.

Here is an idea… In my area there are about 4 of us that want a pack so we are just going to pool our money together make one buck, one mold and 4 casts. It will cut down on cost if you can find someone in your area that wants a pack. Then you don’t have to sacrifice the quality of your materials. You only get one shot at the mold so do it right the first time and you will thank yourself later.
