please don’t put me in the [containment unit](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/containment-unit) for this, but I have no clue as to where this should be posted, anyway I am currently, as previously stated, converting the old RPG into a d10 system, I am 90% finished, and knowing this is the movie section, I have movie questions. First, I know that the [power cells](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/power-cell) (according to gb2) have a half life of 5,000 years, but in the original script (GB) the packs needed charging, and in RGB as well. so how should i treat this? also as a side note when I am finished I will post my conversion for player review that is a little more fair.

The [proton packs](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack) didn’t need charging.

Deleted and cartoon material NEVER takes precedance over what is seen on screen.

Even though they have a half life wouldn’t they still need to be charged to be kept at _full_ life? I’d say both movies, as well as that deleted line from the script, are correct.

I always thought that the “half-life” comment is talking about how many times you can recharge before the pack battery is dead for good, i.e. like lithium rechargable AA batterys, you can recharge them after they die to full charge, but over time the “full charge” isnt what it was when it was new.

</div>

that’s how I interpreted it, giric. Like rechargeable batteries. Just these happened to have a LONG ASS lifetime 😃

Granted I think in the cartoon, it was only not charged a couple of times to “conveniently” put the guys in danger 😃 As far as cartoons go and other cartoon scenarios that enabled their equipment not to work.

One kinda fun thing, the box with the blue scrolling light in it is named the [power cell](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/power-cell). Never really used to give this much thought before, or didn’t realize it.

Of course they have a long ass half-life. Their rechargable batteries…well, it all must be like the Delorean from back to the future “no no no, this sucker’s electrical, but I need a nuclear reaction…” Mmmmmmm, plutonium batteries _that gargly noise Homer Simpson makes when he opens his mouth wide and sticks out his tongue_ 😛

I think the half life means the battery will last for a while as long as the pack isn’t being fired, but firing it uses the battery up and then it has to be charged.

I always assumed that the half-life referred to the radioactive decay of some nuclear material inside the pack.

I could be way off, as I don’t really know how a [proton pack](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack) works, but they have been referred to as “nuclear accellerators”.

</div>

A half life doesn’t have to be radioactive material related. For instance, caffeine has a half life of 4 hours (in the average person), meaning that after every 4 hour period the amount of caffeine in your system will reduce by one half (though you probably already knew that).

I don’t think half life necessarily has to refer to nuclear material. Egon says(granted in script not the finished film so I guess whoever wants to, can take that for what it’s worth) there’s no fissionable material involved but rather a static electrical discharge.

That comment is in response to Venkman’s “nuclear accelerator” comment. Egon looks too nervous/out of it in the elevator to respond. We may never know! I never really considered them nuclear but I really don’t know enough to argue either way 😃 Of course it’s all based on real things and real science as everyone knows but at some point with what little was divulged in the movies about them, there is not a whole lot of concrete stuff to go on and how much they were just “making up” to sound cool.

You cannot take into account something that was never even filmed and compare it to information given in the movie.

Unlicensed Nuclear Accelerators.

Half life of 5000 years.

Total Particle Reversal

[Proton Packs](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack)

All seems very nuclear to me.

Watch me! :lol: Anyway not to argue really because I do agree the way they’re described a lot make them sound nuclear. Who knows.

[http://www.princeton.edu/~rskemp/Kemp%20-%20Nuclear%20Proliferation%20with%20Particle%20Accelerators.pdf](http://www.princeton.edu/~rskemp/Kemp%20-%20Nuclear%20Proliferation%20with%20Particle%20Accelerators.pdf)

That article I found said “Particle Accelerators are useful simply because they are not nuclear reactors; their otherness currently places their technologies safely outside the nonproliferation community’s watchful eye” Sounds to me where EPA concerns would come in “possibly hazardous waste chemicals in your basement etc”

I dunno, I guess I liked the bit of mystery regarding them and liked to think they weren’t nuclear and there was more to it than that. Though yes “half life” doesn’t have to refer to nuclear as others have said. I always liked the idea more that they weren’t nuclear and people who didn’t really know about them thought they were nuclear. :whatever: I’m probably way off base. Meh.

EDIT: Nevermind guess it is.

Guys Half Life has nothing to do with recharging of batteries.

Half life describes the decay of the material over a period of time in intervals/ measurements; in this case more then likely radioactive.

It does not mean really that the material will only be at 50% in 5000 years either.

For example say you have one atom with a half life of 5 minutes. In 5 minutes you will not have half an atom. You will either have one atom or no atom left.

</div>

my guess, is the material is nuclear, however, a base amount of power is needed to start the reaction. hence the charging. not to emit proton streams, but to start the reaction that emits protons. 🕶 to power the collider.

That’s not quite exactly right. For one, there is no law regarding an individual atom. On that level, it all appears random (check god: the failed hypothesis). In the case of nuclear material, take uranium…it decays into lead, and depending on the isotope in question, has a half life of x billion of years. After x billion of years have passed, half the amount of uranium will have decayed into lead…it doesn’t simply disappear.
