Repost: Dissecting the screen used Pack!

Back in 2004, Profiles in History auctioned off a pair of Proton Packs from Ghostbusters II, one was a foam stunt pack, the other was a Semi-Hero, which eventually found it’s way into Ken Heugel’s hands, and Sean Bishop’s workshop. Along with community members J Ryan and Chris Sonneburg, they disassembled the Proton Pack and documented it, providing one of the most rare opportunities to see how that particular generation of props ticked.

In preservation of that original article, I have reposted it here, along with key posts that followed in reply:

And that’s it. Sadly there weren’t any further opportunities for the Pack to be photographed, yet despite that the photos that were posted still offer a considerable amount of information, information which a few industrious members have worked from in order to create accurate recreations of that Pack’s lighting.

Thanks for reposting this!

Wow! What an eye opener! Thanks for reposting!

Classic thread. Sucks what happened to his pack :frowning:

This needs to be bumped a few times a year. To bad Ken and the pack didnt have Cinderella ending! Thanks for bring it back again for others to view. This is the first thread I ever read over on proptopia back in the day.

What happened to Ken and the pack?

Man, did anyone save the larger versions of the close-ups? I wanted to redo the wire wrapped power cell board and the large image would really help.

Ken had it stolen from him. He was moving to Romaina. He made it there but his pack went missing. I think all that was left in the case he had it in was the bumper and a few other small pieces.

Some idiot in security probably thought it was a “bomb” and discarded it.. Probably into the trunk of his car :3

I think both Imageshack and the forum have scaled them down a little. I’ve uploaded some copies of the three close up shots of the electronics… I hope these help:

It’s amazing how airport security is a bigger enemy than the people they are supposedly “protecting” us from. I’d have strapped that sucker on and considered it part of my in flight wardrobe lol. Did he have insurance for his luggage?

and for $3,000.00 you can have one too!

“Kingpin, I’m gonna take back some of the things I’ve said about you… Here. You deserve it”. :crunch:

I’ve had things taken out of my bags before after coming home from trips. Thankfully, its been things that I can easily replace. I’d like to go to Comic Con or something with my pack someday, but this makes me nervous.

Question .Does any one recall if this pack had the cup holders for the makita battery packs at the top of the mother board?Im aware that this pack was refitted to run of outlet power for display but was it there at one time? (mounting holes etc.).And lastly did the batteries actually run the lights on the pack ,Im considering doing this .Thanks to who ever has input.

A shot of the other side of the Motherboard was never posted, nor was there a shot of the A.L.I.C.E. Pack frame that came with it, so no absolute proof of a Makita… however, look at the section of board above that large, main mounting bolt… it wouldn’t surprise me if some of those four screws might be there to hold a battery bracket in place.

This is the only photo that I’ve seen of the back of this particular pack. Sadly, the top portion where the Makita battery would be is obscured…

Oh brilliant! Thanks for posting that. Are there any other images you got from the auction that haven’t yet been posted? Would make a nice catelogue of info to have them all here if they still existed.

These are all of the photos that I’ve seen from the auction. I believe these were on GBProps years ago (christphern was gracious enough to share them with me for reference with my own build).
