shell onto motherboard issues

As you know I have a Xenepp recast of a V71 fiberglass shell.

I recently purchased a motherboard from Smithythesurveyor.

I have had both the shell & the motherboard for some weeks, yet not put the two together until just a few days ago. This is what I came across…

excuse my cat Molly… she’s quite a diva when it comes to the camera as you’ve probably notice she pops up in nearly all my pics, grr

*As you can see it’s a nice fit, until you get to where the injectors are located ^ to the left on the photo “dun, dun dunnnn” a nice hollow view into the pack. I can’t understand though, the measurements are stated to be of Stefans plans which should in theory match the shell… am I wrong? I’ve probably been really ignorant and just assumed…

a better shot…

… So just a heads up to people with this

Someone told porkies there!

Could you not cut out a shape piece from say plywood to fill the hole and attach it to the shell permanently?

Oh yeah it’s fixible. I can sort it out quite easily enough.

Ghosttrooper asked me to take pic’s for him of the two. He says he has the same shell and is wanting to buy a mobo.

Well, there you go dude ^ there’s your answers… :angryvigo:

It is annoying though I can imagine that 2 parts you expect to fit don’t. So I can sympathise there. Still these things are sent to challenge us! Just look at my first build back thread, I ended up burning my hand with my hot blue gun and having to bandage my hand up for days!

lol tell me about it. I’ve lost count how many times I have had scrapes with injuries! For example; resin flying dangerously close to eye whilst cutting (still manages to get behind safety specs) tool bits flying off the dremel cause you going in too intense. The Mrs hates it when I step foot into that workshop!

Yeah the good old dremmel! I got a piece of plastic stuck in my eyelid. Just thought it was a stye until a few weeks after I had a prod at it with tweesers and pulled out a bit of plastic

Just saw your profile and the Ernie Hudson pic. Cool! What was he like?

A legend on both occasions, happy to talk regarding anything and everything Ghostbusters related. He was fascinated with my pack and made some really nice comments which is always great to hear ~ especially from Ernie himself.

I can’t remember alot of the conversation that took place other than when I asked him if he sees much of the old cast. He says he sees “Danny” frequently, and had lunch with him just a week prior to doing that particular convention.

Great guy, I’m sure I’ll make it 3 outta 3 soon. He seems to be a Con’ regular

check this out …

Cool! He seems like a top bloke would love to meet him!

Love the stuff

Many thanks. I’m pretty clued up on the convention scene ~ I will notify the board if ANY GB related guests sign to appear at Con’s across the UK.

The shell is wrong.

Look at the bottom edge of the powercell. If you’re looking at the pack from the front, that horizontal line should continue to the right 3/4" before there’s any step down. It looks like whoever built the shell made the angled piece that the large pipe sits on top wide enough that it was flush with the powercell. But there’s supposed to be a 3/4" gap between the angled part with the pipe and the power cell.

If you want to do the repair right, then you’ll need to cut the fiberglass and rebuild that section somehow.

You might be able to see the gap I’m talking about here on my pack I’ve been building with Stephan’s plans:

And yes, the ion arm is backwards, but nothing was glued togehter I just put the parts next to eachother for a photo.

Yeah I noticed that too…

Its in V71’s plans like that but I havnt seen that extra part on any screen used packs… So thats why I never add it in my shells. I believe Exoray has amended that corner in the shell of V71’s that he is using to make his shells from.

But yeah… that corner isn’t supposed to be there, and the actual angle follows the curve of the Mobo…

If you want to fix it… My initial suggestion would be mark the cuts using the mobo for reference, dremel the corner off to a right angle, stick in some MDF to re make the corner, then fill the corner until its curved

Lawrence

The V71 shells all had this corner present (I don’t know about his more recent things.. I think not). It always annoyed me, but it had to of come from somewhere. It was so readily apparent that it wasn’t on any of the real Planet Hollywood packs.

Slow down there… It’s not what is normally seen but jumping immediately to the “it’s wrong” is in haste…

It’s still present on Sean’s new shells as well…

I believe it might have been on the foam stunt castings and possibly extras shells, can’t say if it was actually seen on screen, keep reading…

It is also on the “Universal Studios” incarnations of the shell, as well as the STUDIO destroyed and then pieced back together mold that has had some limited shells made from it… So it has some studio origins thus it’s possible it was used on screen, just not playing a major role…

If you go to the reference section here and look at the Planet Hollywood, NY section go to page 5, second photo and you can see a little hint of it on the Universal pack…

The Universal pack as whacked as it is, did come from studio molds and shares identifiable tells with the real packs, but has this addition… When or why it was added is a mystery, but my belief was it was added to the stunt foam shells mold…

Yes, I totally rebuilt this area of Sean’s shell to be more consistent with the normally seen reference material…

Now back on topic…

As far as the fit issue, my advice get yourself a sheet of aluminum and cut a custom board for that shell…

As I suspected, it’s on the stunt packs and in the movie, this is from the scene where they fall into the hole in the street and is stunt pack, you can make out the ledge next to the PPD… Not the clearest picture but it’s there, more evident when you are stepping through the frames…

I would bet it is there as some form of support to the Injector Tubes.

Come on… He’s clearly not interested in recreating the STUNT packs. :sigh:

You make it sound so simple!

All you gotta do is lay it down draw round it and cut it out though… Only a few parts would have to be free hand.

Lawrence

does the mobo from MMM would have the same issues with this shell ?

Well I’m not to say what he is out to recreate, as there are tons of packs on this forum that deviate from the screen used ones in one way or another, and most people are more then happy with the packs they create that represent what they saw on screen… This difference is in fact seen on screen a deviation that is, dare I say “screen accurate” and as I pointed out seen on screen just this way, yet you call it wrong?

As I have shown it’s not wrong, it’s just not seen on the hero packs…

The shell he has is made that way, just like any oddity or altercation on every shell offered… Every shell deviates from the screen used hero ones in some form… And by the time you put the injector tubes on and the ribbon cable that area is hardly noticeable, at least no more noticeable then all of other compromises or tweaks made on just about any shell I have seen… And even it it is noticeable, it’s still not wrong as it was that way for several of the packs throughout the movie, about half to the roof scene was filmed with stunt packs, even many of the closeups…

Because it really isn’t that hard…

And neither is tweaking the shell to fit that mother board that simple… He has already had a lot of issues with that shell, cutting into it and whacking it up is only asking for further problems…

Cutting 1/8" aluminum isn’t exactly hard, a cheap (they cost about $20 here) jig saw will cut it just fine, trace the shell with a marker, make the corrections where it doesn’t follow the profile of the shell and cut it… Sand and file for a clean fit… It’s not that hard, and certainly not beyond the talent of the average hobbiest if they put their mind to it… A lot of people have done it over the years, I did when I made a motherboard for a Funkzillza v1 shell as it didn’t fit the laser cut boards all that well either…

The fact is even your shell in progress that you posted deviates from the reference hero packs in that area as well, is your shell ‘wrong’ as well?

Yes, any motherboard built to Stefan’s plans will have issues with this shell… But, it really shouldn’t be a concern as Sean doesn’t offer his shells up for sale they are only out in the wild in VERY low numbers, the one in question is an unauthorized recast from someone Sean ‘helped out’ by sending him a shell…

Yes both mobo’s are cut to the same dimensions.

Btw Ghosttrooper, you stated you have a shell from Joel? Do you have it in your possession or have you paid him for one? He is backlisted you know?

Anyway back to the mobo ~

As previously mentioned your best bet (if you want to be a perfectionist) is to get your own mobo cut to the size of the shell.

I’m happy with my mobo in all truth, as you can see from the snap below…

…once the ALICE frame is attached it hides it ~ you can’t really see it…
