I have been wondering about this as well.

In the DIY sound thread by MattBurkit? I think, he recommends some speakers. I believe they are 4 inch woofers that are 8 Ohms. I believe most car audio speakers are woofers and tweeter combos, but most are 4 Ohms.

So the question is:

Does that matter?

4 Ohm vs. 8 Ohm?

Does anyone have any more information or a link to a topic that discusses Ohms further?

The amp that I recommend puts out 8 ohms. So you can use 1 8 ohm speaker or 2 4 ohm speakers in parallel. It’s up to you but that’s why I recommended the 8 ohm speakers that way you’d be safe with either set up.

If the amp says to use 8 ohms then you NEED to use at least an 8 ohm speaker. If you try and hook up a 4 ohm speaker you’ll be drawing twice as much current from the amp which might cause it to overheat or simply stop working.

The other thing to consider when buying a speaker is the power it is rated for. If you’re amp puts out 5 watts, then you’ll want to make sure the speaker you hook up to it is rated at least 5 watts.

Finally, you should also look at the frequency response of the speaker. You want a lower Hz number and a higher kHz number in the rating to put it simply. That way you make sure your speaker is able to put out any frequency your amp might throw at it.

Cole,

Thanks for the replies.

This is much needed information.

I’m sure as more of us are adding sound to our packs, I am not the only one wondering about these things.

I got 2 of these.

Rob at replica props told me it was a good choice for the DIY sound chip setup.

Wouldn’t you want to put the 2 - 4ohm speakers in series? In series the circuit would total 8ohms, where as if you put them in parallel that would make the circuit 2ohms.

This is correct. In parallel, the equivalent resistance is 2Ω, while in series it’s 8Ω.

Here’s what Rob from Replica Props posted about using 2 speakers with the suggest 8ohm amp.

Yeah, sorry, I had it backwards, my bad. You’d want 2 4 ohm speakers in a series or 2 8 ohm speakers in parallel.

as you may get some serious distortion from the speaker

I’m currently using one 8 ohm 6x9 from autozone.

It ran me about $15 I want to say but is plenty loud.

Look for the one in the plastic clamshell.

I’m not sure about the all-in-one setup AJ has in the works.

If you want more than one speaker you will still need to achive 8 ohms for the current setups.

You can find a pair of 4Ω, 3-way speakers at Wal-mart for about $25-30, or on eBay for $20-25 pretty easily. I wouldn’t recommend going with a single 4Ω speaker in preparation of getting a second; electronics and such.

I’d be interested in seeing this too. I am about a month out before I add a speaker. But researching options now.
