Here’s how I drilled and mounted my Exoray [bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) to an alkaline shell

.

First I determined the exact center of the bumper’s middle rectangle area. I just penciled a line from each corner then drilled at the “X” of the pencil lines. Sorry no pics for this, but not very difficult.

The top edges of the bumper seem to run even with the two upper [cyclotron](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/cyclotron) light’s outer rings lowest edges.

I held it there while I drilled through the bumper and shell for the shock mount.

Then I mounted the shock mount in order to hold bumper steady while I drilled for the side screws. I made sure to keep the bumper parallel with the side plates.

I really just eyeballed the position and drilled the bumper and shell at the same time.

Started with 1/8 drill bit. After the hole is done ,remove your drill bit and place it in the hole to hold the bumper while you align the bumper for your second hole using a 9/64 bit.

I alternated this until I got up to the 1/4. When one hole is 1/4 inch, slip in the bolt to hold things steady while you drill the final hole.

 ![image](https://discdn.gbfans.com/original/3X/4/d/4df76696ca6bb444ce2fabe72b84ee14f44e1823.jpeg)

I worked on one side at a time. Bolted that side then repeated the same process on the opposite side. I found I had to push a little to get things lined up but the bumper flexible enough.

Just for kicks, here are where the holes ended up in the shell.

I set mine on the corners between the plates, on both sides.

Mine too! Glad to see I’m not the only one. That thread made me nervous all of a sudden. 😉

Great tutorial, by the way!

Nice to see some brass washers on the bumpers! Doing that for my pack as well.

You see packs with either steel or brass in the first movie. So either is accurate.

Hmmm… Although my install went well,

Looking at it now,and other packs around the site. I think my [bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) may be mounted a little too low.

I was focusing on aligning just under those upper light holes.

Should the shock mount be in the EXACT center of the [cyclotron](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/cyclotron)?

Mine is off a bit. :boogieman:

I may consider redoing it now…not sure

According to my sources, the hole of the shock mount IS in the exact center of the [cyclotron](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/cyclotron). Confirmation, anyone?

Yeah, I decided my [bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) positioning was off. Raised the bumper by drilling btween those side plates.

Patched my old holes and repainted those areas. Not very visible under the bumper anyway.

I like things better now! Time for a cold one! 🆒

If the sides are installed in between the plates, yes.

I used the image on this page ( [http://www.gbfans.com/equipment/proton-pack/part-names/](http://www.gbfans.com/equipment/proton-pack/part-names/) ) Its a pretty dead on shot. I made the [bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) basically flush with the top two lenses and the bottom sat where it sat.

Hmm…I just attached a couple of L brackets to my [motherboard](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/motherboard) and bolted the [bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) to those.

Is the shock mount supposed to actually touch the [cyclotron](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/cyclotron) behind the bumper? Mine’s raised at least a half inch from the rings and cakepan.

There is a little spacer between there.
