Has anyone been able to accomplish this? What i mean is having it open and having some sort of bright light, and kinda a small fog machine inside, does anyone know if this is possible

Hi again… lol

There has always been problems with trying to make a trap smoke successfully. the biggest issue is it becoming a fire hazard.

Small fog machines do not emit enough smoke to be seen easily… which makes this a lot harder to do!

i know a lot of research has gone into it… and i dont think a foolproof method has been established…

I’m thinking “small pyrotechnics”

problem. Most trap are made from wood and plastic… or “fire hasard” as mentioned before.

In any case, I’ll be wanting to make something in the like of fog or smoke.

The light side, that’s easy in comparison.

The only reason for making a trap smoke (other than for a film effect) would be to deploy it in a public place for others to see it, problem is if you did this you could get fined for public mischief or unlawful deployment it in a public place… not to mention if you set off a fire suppression system and caused damages to property you could be liable.

Cool effect? Yes Practical? NO

A friend of mine who is a professional DJ set off a fire system with his fog machine in a hotel ball room and he almost got fined by the fire dept. for unauthorised use. The infrared sensors detected the smoke, could have cost him $500, just something to consider.

I was thinking of maybe using dry ice some how, but I think it would be too hard to do.

I have done a couple of things that work pretty well visually. One thing I did was hot glue a pen cap tp the front wall of my cap, with this you can mount a ciggarette( I buy cheap ones so I don’t feel like I’m wasteing them). Under the cigg. mount I built a small ashtray out of lego’s to catch the ash and prevent fire. That’s one way, cigg. smoke is a bit thicker and that’s why I picked that. You could use a smoke bomb, although they’re not as readilly available. A common thing used sometimes is incense. I had stocked up on smoke bombs last July since I can buy them MOST places, I got mine at Kmart. Just a few options, a lot have been explored.

Awesome idea, give spectators cancer while admiring your prop.

I found a thread on another board with hyperdyne using a mini fogger, but all his old videos have been removed from the link location.

There are mini foggers for like model trains. I think it was concluded that they do not give off enough smoke. There is another video on youtube somewhere of someone using a battery, copper wire, and a pencilo to create a lot of smoke for the trap.

Don’t forget the part of the video where the trap explodes.

Haha, i remember seeing that. Doesnt he say something like “ok, we have a lot of smoke and an explosion” Made me laugh lol

I think the only way to do it is the way from the movies… Does anybody know what chemical reaction was used?

my idea is to be able to use the functionning trap during masquerades in conventions… won’t happen often if the trap explodes. ☹

I’m not sure I like the way he makes it, the concept is mainly to have a short and burn a pencil over 12V, which isn’t as controlled as proper pyrotechnics IMHO. I’d be pleased to discuss with him.

I like the model train smokers idea. maybe 2-3 of them?

If i’m not mistaken, the smoke was acheived in the moves via a chemical reaction between a liquid and 2 strips of SOMETHING on either side of the trap doors. You guys already know everything else, is it really that hard to figure out what caused that reaction and replicate it yourselves?

I don’t know anything about getting chemical strips and whatnot but here’s a cool video I found. Interesting. I know some of you brainiacs out there can make it happen 😃

There are others. This one suggests hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate

Dunno what the answer is but just a few searches turned up a lot of info regarding chemical smoke reactions.

H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide.. it naturally breaks down into H2O and O2.. and uses the salt to accelerate the breakdown. It doesn’t really last long enough to do long effect.. unless you are continually adding the two ingridents together. The nice thing is.. the water vapor and oxygen are pretty safe.

Yeah looking at the one video it didn’t look like it would be good for lasting too long at all.

EDIT: Well watching the movie now, its funny before the manager says “$5000?” the smoke is getting really thin then as they go to put [Slimer](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/characters/slimer) back in the ballroom and gets really heavy as they leave. Gotta love editing 😃 Or the traps conveniently start smoking when handing off to Winston. It’s not much some of it might be Ray’s cigarette as well. :whatever:

Guess there must be something a little better out there.

I’m still a fan of incense cones myself. Line the inside of the trap with metal and epoxy a few nails, head down, inside. Just spear a few incense cones on the nails and light them up and it works great. Mix 2 or 3 different scents and you can get some pretty funky smells that add a little something to it as well.

As far as bright lights? Luxeon LEDs. Just make sure you have a heatsink and keep the incense cones pretty far from them. 1 or 2 ought to do it.
