Excused for the question.

Who has designed the [Proton Pack](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack) in the Ghostbustes film?

Thanks.

I do know that Dan Akroyd had a MAJOR part in drawing up and designing the original [proton packs](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack). He’s got some sort of savy for technical stuffs like that. I am quite sure he did at least 75% of the proton pack design.

I don’t think he did that much of the finished prop. I know he went into the meetings for the movie with drawings of what he wanted, which he had an artist friend draw. I think he pretty much just came up with the idea that it was a pack and a gun, since at one point the original ideas were that the wand would be attached to their arms. I know he came up with them, but I don’t really think he specifically designed them.

He did come up with the logo, it just looked slightly different.

I could be wrong, though.. this is just going by what I’ve read in the past.

I think I heard where his artist friend had a hand in creating the logo too… I remember it was said that they had to be careful that the ghost in the logo didn’t look too much like Casper.

The 1999 DVD release of Ghostbusters has a slideshow of early concept drawings, including quite a few of the logo. Alot of them looked almost identical to Casper. I read an interview with [Ivan Reitman](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/people/ivan-reitman) several years ago in Entertainment Weekly, and he says the idea of a “no ghost” logo was involved in Aykroyd’s very first draft of the script. (He went on to say that it was about the only thing he liked about that first draft, too.)

As for the packs, I think I recall hearing on the DVD commentary that Aykroyd played a very active role in the design of the gear. The DVD has production drawings of the ghosts, the car, the neutrona streams…pretty much everything EXCEPT the packs! :x

At least 75%? Why not 78%? Is this pull out arbitrary numbers day? Some of the concepts included helmets and double guns… there’s no saying how much influence Akroyd had over the final screen shown design. GB was a very rushed production, I’m sure the case is more that designs were thrown at him, he will have tweaked a few visual concepts (rather than precise details) and then it would have been left to the prop guys to build the master/make the shells as quickly as possible.

Dan’s idea might well have been rag-tag mechanicals, but I’m sure majority of the design was done by the prop guys, checking what fitted the alloted budget, and could be replicated several times over with ease.
