I’ve been looking at the reference pics, and the movie, and at best, I can say that in the first movie, the stickers were kinda dark and had this weird sheen to the red… But I can’t see a hint of chrome vinyl anywhere.

There’s some small stickers on the pack, the gun, and maybe on one of the lenses of the [ecto goggles](https://www.gbfans.com/shop/mattel-ecto-goggles), but that’s it as far as chrome stickers goes that I can find.

Oh and that one big one on the [n-filter](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/n-filter) in the first movie.

Am I missing something, or is it just a cosmetic decision?

You can see it delaming in this reference photo…

And if you watch the end of GB1 when they slide the packs out of the ecto, you can see on the second pack in were it’s totally delamed and is metallic in appearance…

Chrome would be the wrong descriptor for any of the pack labels, other than the Clippard ones. There are metallic ones, with foil backings, and the one on the top of the pack is definitely one of them.

I’ve looked at those, but I don’t see where you’re getting “metallic” from.

In order to say definitively that they’re metallic, you’d have to be able to observe some difference in the reflective properties between the metallic portion, and the vinyl that surrounds it. And I don’t see that.

Well technically chrome would be the wrong descriptor for any label, since chrome is a coating applied to metal in an electrochemical process, and not something you’d find on a label. So the clippard labels would be foil as well. 🙂

But semantics aside… this label looks like it has a mirror finish to me:

And examining the scene where they enter the elevator, the one on the [n-filter](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/n-filter) does as well:

This one I can’t be sure about:

But perhaps that’s neither here nor there, because while trying to determine if that one had a mirror finish, I discovered it’s not even on the packs in the first film:

![image](http://raccoonrocket.com/gb/reference/GB-HD-Ref-36.jpg)

There’s actually a red label there instead. Looks like one of the DANGER labels.

And what’s that I see down at the bottom on the [motherboard](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/motherboard)? Is that another label? Maybe something to identify the pack as Ray’s for the costume people?

Anyway… I still can’t find any evidence that the top label is any sort of reflective metallic, or that the label on the HGA is either. But the HGA and the top label seem to have the same sort of backing material, and that box in the middle of the HGA label is kinda gray, so maybe it is. It’d look pretty cool as an aluminum disc with a silkscreened label on it anyway. But the top label is clearly no such thing. Maybe a vinyl decal applied over aluminum then?

The second to last reference photo is of a GB 2 pack, some of the labels are different. I just wonder if that has anything to do with the pack weighing less in GB 2, if in fact the labels on the GB 1 pack are metallic (which could add a little to the overall weight), or maybe some of the [old ones](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/characters/old-one) fell off, and they didn’t want to spend the money to make new ones, so they decided to just print out stickers to use instead…it could happen. 🆒

I’m pretty sure they didn’t make the labels out of depleted uranium. 🙂

What I said about “chrome” labels still holds true the only ones that had a mirror finish were the ones on the Clippard valves. Metallic doesn’t mean that they are mirror-like or even reflective just that they had a foil backing which was common on industrial equipment to give longevity to the labels.

To see the metallic quality of the one on the top of the pack you need to watch the scene where Ray sees [Slimer](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/characters/slimer). No single screen cap really shows it but if you watch how the light reacts on it you can see that it’s got a metallic backing.

The one on the HGA actually was an aluminum disc with the red printed on, like many manufacturers plates.

So then which labels are metallic and which are not? I had just assumed that the ones where the letters were not a colour where metallic. is this correct?

From what I’ve seen, the EDA, HGA, [Bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper), silver gun label and the [injector](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/injectors) tube block label are all metallic. It’s likely the White/Silver [N-Filter](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/n-filter) one is as well, but I’ve never heard for sure one way or the other.

Just so we’re clear… when you say it has a metallic backing, does this metallic backing show through only where the text and diagrams are? Or does it affect the appearance of the whole label?

Cause when I watch that scene, and any of the others where you can see it, the whole label looks shiny to me.

I should really check GB2 though to see how it looks there, cause that label on top of Ray’s pack in Planet Hollywood doesn’t look anything like how it looks in the first film. I think they replaced it.

I think we need to figure out some kind of terminology to use for these things. 🙂 Cause when some folks, like me, say “foil” or “metallic” they mean a mirror finish, while others mean… well I don’t know what they mean. I guess the non-mirror finish side of aluminum foil? Metal, but dull?

And then there’s the HGA “label” which may be an aluminum plate with silkscreening, which people are also referring to as metallic.

Anyway, in regards to the [bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) label, every shot and reference photo I’ve seen of it points to it being just blue and white vinyl. Nothing metallic or foil about it.

What’s wrong with Kinkos?

I was gonna have some mirror-finish [vinyl labels](https://www.gbfans.com/shop/pack-vinyl-labels) printed up at Kinko’s and sell them… and I produced an illustrator file which is as exact a replica of the top label as I could make, with transparency for the text regions (damn that font was hard to find)… but then I started researching the labels some more and that’s when I realised half these levels I thought had a mirror finish to the lettering really didn’t.

And metallic vinyl which doesn’t have a mirror ffinish is apparently impossible to come by. ☹

I think it looks great. Before you run out and get it printed I would upload pics of them all so that people can catch mistakes. If you want to do it, go for it. I do not have any real ambition right now and it would be more hassle for me to do it. Id be down if you got a good, accurate set produced.

Metallic just means they’re metal labels. Either printed directly on it(like the HGA label) or a transparency with the colored layer is applied to a very thin metal sheet(think aluminum tape, if not thinner). In either case, the ink is going to be slightly translucent allowing the metal to shine through. You’re not going to be able to tell in most photographs or on film unless the light is hitting them just right. The PH photos are especially no help considering they’ve got years of dust that’s collected and stuck to them, further dulling the metallic sheen.

People who have seen and handled the packs in person have confirmed these labels are metal. Here’s the best example I’ve found of the [Bumper](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/bumper) label:

That photo is also why I have doubts the [N-Filter](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/n-filter) label is metal.

If you check the beginning of the hotel sequence, you can clearly see the [n-filter](https://www.gbfans.com/wiki/equipment/proton-pack/n-filter) label has a mirror finish to it. Watch Egon’s pack as he turns to face the elevator.
