Wood to use for pack?

.

I think you should make your pack out of solid cement. Yeah, it’ll be a little heavy, and it could chip or crack, and the surface might not be quite right, and it you drop it will shatter, and it might be harder to work with…

but at least its not bass wood.

LOL awesome idea. I was thinking carving a pack out of a solid block of marble or granite might work too. Make it look like I’m wearing a fancy kitchen counter-top on my back

Yep, that was the basswood we found at Home Depot last year.. I even consdered other woods at the time, but the wife reminded me that basswood was what was recommened, so thats what we purchased. Yes it is a laminate of some kind, and yeah we thought trying to use it for a mb didn;t make sense, but someone here recommended it. IMHO it was too thin for a mb anyway, and I’m much happier then what we settled on.

We bought exactly the sized basswood sheets someone recommended here from Home Depot. The only pars that survived going into our packs are the clippard bases (which are 50% too thin, IMHO), and the decorative plats around the sync generator.

It could be someone recommended the wrong thing, and that colored our experience with it. We didn’t find any at all at Lowe’s, so we even made an extra longer distance trip to home depot, trying to get was recommended.

What does the basswood you are referring to look like?

Like this:

I was just going to post that exact same photo

That’s the stuff I’m going to use in addition to MDF for the larger parts, the basswood comes pre-cut in perfect sizes for the ribs.

No, that looks nothing at ALL like what we found called basswood. That does however look more like what our final motherboards were made out of.

If thats what we should have found, then I’ll have to retract me comments about basswood in builds then. Too bad I can’t edit my damned posts anymore.. LOL!

I hate for someone to read half way through the thread, make a decision based off misinformation, and not follw the thread to the end, where corrections are made.

wow, you guys sure know how to handle your wood.

Heh, what you said was useful. People should not build a motherboard out of basswood.

What you used for your final motherboard may have been birch. Birch kinda looks like that. And aside from a hard wood like oak which you’d probably have a hard time finding in that thickness, birch would probably flex the least. Supposedly it flexes less than MDF, according to one speaker building site I found. (Apparently you don’t want speaker enclosures to flex.)

But aside from that laminate you bought, I don’t think there’s any sort of “basswood” that comes in motherboard size that you could easily get. Those thicker boards there cost a fortune. I was gonna make the corner piece behind the HGA out of basswood as well until I saw the price of the 1/2" thick boards. The 1/8" thick stuff is reasonably priced, but I think it was like $6 for the 1/2" thick x 3" wide boards. So I just used some leftover MDF from the spacer build for that bit.

Thats what she said! I mean…wait…thats what…

nevermind

Oh and before you ask:

Birch:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure birch is what we ended up using for our MBs. The price was good, and I liked the finish on it as well. I made all the parts for our gunboxes from it, and still have them in a box somewhere, but I’m not sure how well they even fit together.

Making the boxes would have taken a day or two, and I was out of time getting the guns done for halloween last year.. and after a months work, there was no way in hell I was having uniforms and packs done but no guns!

As it was, for the wife’s halloween party, I was working till 4am in the morning. And then while she was at work, I was snoozing in her car.. we got back home, took another nap, and then worked again till the wee hours.

I’m amazed our guns held together for halloween.

They’ll do for now though, till I make new gear with lights and sounds.

did ya’ll hear the news? Obama is considering both of you for the position of “name that wood” czar.

I’ll be yer sportin wood now, EU! LOL!

So.. there’s birch beer (and I like it)…

Is there Bass Beer as well?

And do they use the wood to make it, or the fish?

I’m thinkin about using pecan wood chips on the BBQ this week for a smoked flavor. I read though that it gives your meat a nutty flavor. Can anyone confirm this?

Is that pack made of…wood???

Yeah. That just happened.

I think milk just came out my nose.

Sure that was milk?

I didn’t want to do this, but all this wood sillyness got me laughing, so I’ll return the favor…

With Apologies,

Ok, I’m about to purchase my materials for a wood pack, and I want to review what I’ve read on this post and get it right. Please tell me if any of this is a mistake.

MB, Spacer: MDF

Ribbing: Balsa

Pretty much everything else: Basswood

Is that about right? I don’t want to buy too much of something and waste money.

And which would be best for the wand? I haven’t seen anything in this thread about it.
