Like everyone else, I still straddle the fence on whether a third GB film should be made, but for this post, I’m gonna say what one half of my gut feels. Sure, I would love to have seen a third GB movie…twenty years ago. The world of Ghostbusters has its extraordinary elements, but no one can doubt that its still strongly rooted in reality & for live-action purposes, (call me a pessimist) there’s a part of me that feels its way past its prime; which is why I’d prefer a new television series to a live-action movie. If we’re talking “reality” here, no amount of crafty writing could meet up with the time that’s been lost on this thing. So, for the sake of preserving those dashed hopes if the film doesn’t live up to our super-high expectations, with the right forces behind it, I think a new Real Ghostbusters series seems more plausible & would stand a better chance at reigniting the franchise. Should Dan Aykroyd’s focus shift towards making this a reality instead?
When you think about it, most of us who were too young to experience GB1 firsthand in theaters were introduced to them via the 80’s animated series (although ABC consistently played Ghostbusters as a Movie of the Week), it was the Saturday morning cartoon that familiarized us with the characters & their universe. Of course the downside to all this reboot talk being the recent retelling of shows like Thundercats that also failed to meet the expectations set by fans of the original series and was eventually cancelled. However, if done the right way (I think of shows like Avatar: the Last Airbender who brought back the original creators & writers for its spin-off series, The Legend of Korra), it may have a chance at succeeding & recapturing the magic of the original RGB series. Yes, I know we are talking about a program whose heyday was nearly thirty years ago & attempting to get some of the original writers (JMS) would be next-to-impossible as most have moved on in their careers, far beyond the realms TV animation. (not to mention the bad taste left after the whole Slimer/Junior Ghostbusters fiasco)–but it’s worth a try, no?
Part of me has always wanted to see a Real Ghostbustersmovie, just for the novelty, but I think a brand new RGB series would probably not work too well. Firstly, I think most ghostheads consider XGB to be canon, so you’d have to deal with those characters in some way, at least at first (unless you want them frozen in the late 80’s, early 90’s). Also, RGB is not as popular or well-known as the live-action films…
If anything, I think a live-action TV series is the way to go. The technology should be no problem nowadays. The hard part obviously would be passing the torch to a new crew since, presumably, none of the three leads would accept a recurring role (Ernie likely would though I bet). They could either have the originals guest star on a pilot for a smoother transition (less risky, and maybe more acceptable to Bill), or take a big risk with a completely fresh cast and franchise.
I agree. IMO everybody is too old and after hearing Ashton Kutcher might replace Bill Murray’s character I really don’t want to see that. It would be a passing the torch movie at this point. To me the Ghostbusters video game from 09 is a way better sequel to the movies than a live action movie would be now. Honestly I think they should do another game and this time make it a multiplayer game where you can play through story mode with up to 4 players like in Marvel Ultimate Alliance. But yeah. A passing the torch movie of ghostbusters is not something I want to see.
A new RGB series would not do well mainly beacause most kids today don’t even know what Ghostbusters are. We’d need GB3 or a remake of GB, THEN the cartoon series.
I am afraid I must beg to differ with you there. My kids know what it is, and my five year old LOVES to watch RGB on youtube all the time. If I could get her the box set for XMAS this year then I will cuz she watches it for hours.
And to be completely honest Daddy needs a brake from My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake (I have three little girls) LOL
If not aimed at kids, aim it at the " Adult Swim \ Toonami " crowd. Lets face, well be the ones watching, and theres enough GB-nostaliga in the air of the modern college crowd that theyd probably tune in as well.The first 2 seasons were edgy, witty, and intelligent enough to be suitable for adults and children alike, if they established that same tone we’ll be good.
And for the love of god no Dave Coulier.
Or are we going the route of a whole new voice cast? Because i cant seeing anyone else playing Egon and Ray other than LeMarche and Welker, Arsenio reprising Winston would be nice too.
Well, Arsenio is about to relaunch his talk show in the fall, so while it may be a great thought, that’s likely never going to happen.–And please God, no Kevin Michael Richardson (a.k.a the voice of every black guy in every cartoon for the last decade) I mean, do they think we all sound like Bill Cosby’s illegitimate lovechild or what?–But I digress.
I’m sure LeMarche & Welker will be up for it though & I totally agree with your statement about the Adult Swim/Toonami crowd. (that would be me!—more old skool Toonami then the new stuff though) Definitely a good idea!–And yes, no Coulier. The stories could be some original works and/or taken from the IDW comic series.
You know, I’ve often thought of the same thing over the years; way before Ghostbusters the Video Game was even announced. They could pull material & characters from those classic episodes while incorporating its own original stuff–like the definitive sequel to the show (sorry EGB). It’d also be great to get some of the writers from the series. It worked for Paul Dini & the Batman Arkham games. I say, why not?
Funny. A good majority of us feel that way about a third film, lol. This topic has been brought up a few times in various forms and I’ll stand behind my idea of getting Burnham and schoening from the comic and do a new cartoon. Hell as a nod to RGB get Welker, La Marche and Hall back to voice Ray, Egon and Winston respectively. The comic is the most in tune with the GB universe, more so than I think Aykroyd is nowadays.
I guess i’ll be one of the few that would perfer a third film over a new cartoon, not only because the damn movie has be in development hell for a good chunk of my life but because cartoons just isn’t what they used to be. Could be that i’m older and “cartoons are for kids!” yes, but in recent years i’ve found a handful i’ve enjoyed…only to get cancelled. Guess what i’m saying while i’d enjoy a new series I doubt it would last long enough, specially with shows that will remain nameless being empty low common denominator crap, but still manage to score high enough in ratings to achieve another six seasons some how. So yeah a third film is what i’m rooting for. Plus if the movie does good enough who knows we might even get a new series out of it. It’d likely be based on the new recruits but i’m sure they will feature the original team too. So yeah a new movie with a possible new series to come from it, i’d be happy with that.
I think the main deterrent of a 3rd film is that it would indeed be a Kingdom of the Crystal Skull situation. Harrison Ford forgot how to be Indy and it was painfully obvious. Plus Ramis is nearly 70 and the other 3 are in their mid 60’s. I don’t know about you but I’d want to see the original 4 busting ghosts, not old, over weight and peppered in a film centered around a new cast for the simple fact of marketing it as a GB film. I could get behind a 3rd film if it was a CGI film voiced by the actors. But as far as a live action film, I think the ship has sailed. That’s why a cartoon would be a fair compromise.
