I recently picked up a new khaki Rothco flightsuit. But I absolutely hate the yellowish tint that it has. I have already decided the I am going to dye it. So after researching every dyeing related post in the uniform section, I think I have a come up with a good dye recipe:
2 pkgs of Pearl Grey
1/4 pkg of Navy
2 Tbsp of Salt
2 Tbsp of detergent
Funkzilla mentioned how the navy neutralizes the orange -ish tint of the khaki. And his suit looks really good.
So any thoughts? Or should I substitute 1/4 of black instead of navy?
Eric mentioned that the navy blue counters the orange in the khaki. He is correct that navy compliments orange, but to me the suits don’t have as much of an orange tint to them as they do yellow. To compliment yellow, you need purple.
However, don’t mistake this post as “Eric is wrong” but rather that his khaki suit may differ from the ones we are getting. The best advice I can give you is to evaluate the suit and see if it is too yellow or too orange and then choose the complimentary dye color accordingly. I can photograph lots of “khaki” clothes that I have purchased over the years and many of them are all different shades so there very well may have been orange in Eric’s suit.
Also, while I have added purple in the past to my dye baths I notice that pearl grey by itself shows up heavily purple where it soaks into the velcro which suggests to me that the pearl grey has purple already in it to counteract the yellow.
