3D CAD model of the proton pack (pack shell now produced)

I’m a cad enginer using Catia v5 so I decided to make a 3D model of the proton pack. Using the plans from the site so far I have separate models of the mother board, cyclotron, synchronous generator, power cell and injectors, booster and EDA-box and the ion arm. I have assembled all the models into a product to create a full model of the pack. I will get some computer images up tomorrow sometime of what I have so far. From the models I have created a dxf of the mother board which can be given to a laser cutting company near me to cut me a aluminium motherboard to replace my mdf one I’m currently using. I’m hoping to get as much detail into the model ad possible.

i finished some solidworks files a few weeks ago. i also transferred them to .stl and .pdo files for pepakura. i even made them with alternate files, like parts with ribs i have drawn with out ribs so you can choose either file. i omitted pipes and tubes because i didnt think it would be necessary to model them. i also have an assembly, with every component as a separate file you can trade out and update as more accurate plans come out.

im just waiting until i get my build set up before i release them.

When its all done i will look at a link or i can email people the parts.

Now that i have all the main items modeled up to make the pack i have copied all the parts into one model assembled them all together and added a thickness onto them of 5mm to create a model of a shell.

This model can now be written out in igs format and brought into a machining program such as WORKNC or POWERMILL and have cutterpaths generated over the model so that the shell can be cut from a solid pieec of wood or model board.

The model can also be written out as a STL file which can be given to a company who can produce SLA models. (basicly a resin model)

I have also created a model of a mould to produce the pack. The outer surfaces of the pack shell was subtracted from a solid lump leaving you a mould of the pack.

from this model cutter paths can be generated to cut the form away on a cnc machine leaving you a mould so that a resin layup can be produced to create a resin shell.

if any body wants these CAD models to have parts made let me know and i will email them to you in what ever format you require.

i still dont understand why you modeled pipes and tubes.

just so it looked like a complete pack and for a bit of fun really.

While this is defiantly awesome work…it looks like you are following stefan’s plans 100 %

I won’t go into detail, but as awesome as stefan’s plans are they are not that accurate in terms of sizes here and there and they are missing some details that have been discovered and discussed since he made his plans.

At the moment I think one if the closest pack shell build on this site is Bjorn’s…

You might want to check it out if you want to incorporate any of the new curves and angles in your cad model.

Looks really good so far. You should look at adding the N-filter also.

Here’s a detail I have yet to see anyone do on their pack that you should add to this. I posted it a while ago in a separate topic, its a little hard to see but you’ll get the idea

In Stefan’s plans its has it angled and cut straight when that part of the pack and motherboard should be rounded. I think it should look something more like this:

If you have a good look at the reference photos Vincenzo330 took from Sony, you’ll also notice if you look closely.

I’m curious as to what the cost would be to have these plans moulded or fabricated. Ballpark figure of course.

I would like a copy of the cad files. Trying to make my son and myself a proton pack. I was thinking I could cut it into segments and try to get the cnc router to cut it out of foam.

Gah, .igs. CATIAv5 has a horrible problem converting to .igs without distortion.

Converting to Iges is ok. The company I work for models in Catia v5 and we convert to igs for the wnc. The main problem with converting to igs is the file is no longer a solid it becomes surfaces.

I can give people v5 models if they want. Stp is also a good one to use. It all depends what system people use. We went down the route of Iges as that is what he wanted plus most cad systems can read igs files

I wouldn’t mind having these files in STL format. I am making 2 proton packs, one for my 4 year old son and one for myself. I will be posting photos of my builds as I go.
