3D poseable models - proton pack and trap

Free 3D models! :smiley: If anyone here uses Poser or DAZ Studio, these models will load right into your 3D rendering studio. If you have a higher-tier studio, the OBJ geometries are separated for you. If you want to rig the geometry for a specific format, I can send the pre-grouped geometry.

I wish I had known about the library of reference photos here before I made these models!

Includes special effects parented props to simulate the shaft of light when the trap is activated and open, and vapor puffs for when the trap is slammed shut capturing a ghost.

Trap doors open/close using Xrotate, 90 degrees max to avoid poke-through.

Trigger pedal depresses using Zrotate -12 degrees. The plunger button will poke through the top of the treadle at this point, but I assumed there would be a doll’s boot on it, so it shouldn’t be visible.

Use the “visible” check box to hide/show the vapor puffs and lightshaft special effects. Also, remember to turn the parented spotlight (for the lightshaft) on/off as needed.

The red indicator lamps will pulse on/off continuously for use in animation.

Place the trigger pedal assembly where you want it, and in the BODY actor use the side-to-side dials to position the trap.

OBJs are remotely referenced to facilitate use in other studios.

There is software available that enables you to do CGI (computer generated imagery) on your home computer. These programs range from free (DAZ Studio) and moderately priced (Poser 8 ) to midrange (modo 401, LightWave 9) and exxxxxxxxpensive (3dsMax, Maya 2010). The 3D models I posted can be used in these CGI programs. The raw geometry OBJ file could also be used to machine out real physical parts - if you happen to have a rapid prototyper. :stuck_out_tongue:

The proton pack I made is a 3D geometry mesh which is “rigged” (jointed) to flex properly for animation. It fits the popular Aiko 3 and Hiro 3 doll chassis, and I will be making versions for other doll chassis. The 3D proton pack can be used in one of the 3D programs I cited, and some others. The pictures in the post were made with Poser Pro and Poser 8.

I don’t have an animated demo scene using the proton pack, and it would take a lot of time for me to set up an animated scene and probably 15-30 hours to render the video out, but here is a rough-draft example of the Aiko 3 doll chassis animated, simultaneously testing out Appleseed gear, Star Wars light sabres, and a TinkerBell pixie dress and wingset. The male doll chassis is shown in Halo style armor.

While the packs aren’t the most accurate, these look like they could be really fun to play around with… Great job man!

nice work! whats the polygon count for the proton pack? do you do modding for GTA San Andreas? I always wanted to find a proton pack model to replace the parachute backpack model in the game…

And no, they’re not as accurate as they could be. If I had known of the reference image library here before I made them, they would have been closer. Someone in one of the 3D fora asked for a Ghostbuster proton pack to fit the A3 & H3 doll chassis, and I worked from what I could find. Only after I was done, someone else posted a link to this site.

DAZ is free, but it is only a rendering studio - no modeling. I do know of a few free modeler apps, but they are not nearly as good as a modestly priced paid app.

MicroSoft is dumping this modeler as part of their cost-saving measures. Get it while you can, but understand that it is doomed to eventual obsolescence.

DAZ has this interesting package deal for a tut book - the included CD-ROM has DAZ Studio 2.3 (basic rendering studio), Hexagon 2.5 (modeler), and Carrara 6 Pro (more advanced rendering studio and modeler) all for $30.

Significant, because the current Carrara 7 Pro is $550, and Hexagon 2.5 by itself is $150.

  • All 3D modelers require a lot of learning *, but the best combination of capability, (relative) ease of use, and price is Silo 2.1.1

It’s $100, or $160 for the Pro version, which is worth the higher price just for the extra editor panels and the ability to import/export in more file formats. One license allows for installation on three machines, in any combination of PCs/Macs.

modo 401 is top of the food chain in modelers, and sports a superb render studio to boot, but you had better be willing to climb a steep learning curve, and it’s one grand for a license.

Thank you. :slight_smile: The pack model posted is 40,897 polys; way too high for game use. I could make a low poly version. Do you know what format (.obj, .dae,…) you would need? Do you have a polygon count limit in mind? What doll is it for? If you can export a geometry mesh (.obj, .dae,…) of the clothed doll standing with arms straight out to the sides (aka “zero pose”), I can make sure the harness fits.
