$5 cyclotron light alternative! w/ VIDEO !!!!!

I KNEW they would come up with one of these this year! <I>*I'm VERY happy I'm VERY pleased...*</I> :D

At Walmart I found a set of BATTERY POWERED christmas lights that come with 8 different chasing functions! These would be an EXCELLENT cheap alternative for people who don't have the money for one of the nicer lighting kits out there! I've been messing around with them last night and as of right now I can't find anything that is COMPLETELY movie accurate. That's the only downside. There are a few really cool patterns though that I think would look great in a pack though. I will try to get a video hosted tomorrow since I don't have to work but trust me, these things are cool!

They are leds so they are pretty bright. I haven't found a way yet to take the colored lenses off of them but I'm thinking they'll look pretty cool as is. You can take as many bulbs as you want OUT and the rest still light up. So you could put one, two, or three leds per cyclotron light if you want. I'm going to try to use three each and just diffuse the light. But they come with 20 on a string.

And the best part, they're all red! 8)

Just wanted to pass this along for people who are stuck on lights. I myself was just going to have all 4 of the cyclo lights on all the time because I couldn't afford a light kit. But now I will have motion in my cyclo! ya baby!

Oh man… I’m not even gonna fathom how manny different way’s that could be interpreted!

I was messin around with a stringer of Xmas LED lights with the controller box to make them cycle and flash too… however the wife takes precedent and they ended up on the damn bush outside.. haha.

were they battery powered too?! I knew it was only a matter of time before they had battery powered christmas lights that had chasing functions. The leds are the key! Low power consumption etc.

Yeah we have a few battery ones for inside, and 4 massive stringers outside that are plug in’s. I wanted to butcher one of the smaller battery powered ones for the control box, but to no avail!

Dude… go check out walmart man! 5 bucks!

I try looking for them on Walmart website but I couldn’t find it.

But that’s cool. I might get it. I guess I don’t need that electronic light kit anymore.

Even though it’s red, I might change it blue and put some on the power cell.

(edit: correction)

Not everything that Wal-mart sells at its stores can be bought on their site. Bondo, for instance, is an example of something Wal-Mart sells that you can only buy at the store.

Here’s a little video finally. Like I said, not movie accurate… but I think pretty cool. The last/8th function I think is REALLY cool! The pulsing function. Check it out.

great find there for 5 bucks. that would work out great. All you need to do is put a bike reflector infront of it and would work.

Meh…I would fine some sort of clear sheet of something with a similar texture. I had a page divider that had that texture and it looks amazing. Would look better with light under it. I’m jumping on those.

Wow.. I wish I hadn’t of waited until “Black Friday” to decide to go buy some of these, but atleast it will be an adventure! Proto, you rock man! Thanks for the vid too!

If there is a setting to make the controller box run through all of the patterns, I’d choose that, because IMO it would make the cyclotron look like it was actually fusing atoms, or whatever it’s supposed to do, rather than a pattern that keeps repeating. Boring :stuck_out_tongue:

That would be a neat idea but I don’t think it’s possible. Someone with electronics knowledge could possibly do it.

I thought about routing the control box to the thrower so that I could change the functions from there but I’m not sure if I’ve got anywhere in my thrower to put it.

I got the lights. I got three sets. I am going to use it for the power cell, cyclotron, and the gun.

Well I got two sets of the lights yesterday (incase I decide to put together another pack which is most likely going to happen), and installed them in my nearly finished cyclotron. I’m just going to run the wires and box up the motherboard and mount the box up by the ion arm most likely. I have to say, they beat the bejeezus out of the circular pod’s of 8 LED lights I was going to buy, as they did not have any sort of cycling function. Thanks mucho, Proto! They look great!

cool, I’m glad to see this helped someone!

I picked up a pair…how many lights do you have grouped together, and which pattern best fits the cyclotron’s basic patter…I can’t tell.

Would someone be so kind as to post a pic of what the package these things come in looks like? I’m thinking of picking up a set but I’m on a dial-up for the next month and can’t watch the video. Many thanks!

i’ve looked all over the place and been to every wal mart in my area and i cant seem to find these lights anywhere.

I think I still have the packaging somewhere… I’ll try to get a photo of it. I’ll also check walmart tonight and see if they have anymore. I guess the sku # would be usefull too. You could just call Walmart and give them the #, they should be able to look it up.
