Multiplatform Ghostbusters release for US in June

Atari Inc’s CEO and president Jim Wilson has told GamesIndustry.biz that Ghostbusters: The Video Game will be released on all formats in North America June 16.

Earlier today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe revealed that it had signed an exclusive deal to publish the PlayStation SKUs of the game in PAL territories next month, leaving the remaining Wii, DS, PC and Xbox 360 versions on hold.

“The Sony Computer Entertainment partnership is exclusive to Europe, Atari is going to be publishing on all platforms in the US on June 16,” clarified Wilson.

“We assessed the situation of the Ghostbusters franchise in Europe and saw that a united partnership with Sony was the best approach to maximise the long-term value of the franchise. We have an opportunity here to have first-party support behind such a significant franchise and the opportunity to then go back and publish the other SKUs later on.”

When asked whether financial problems were restricting a multiplatform release in Europe, Wilson replied, “No, not that I’m aware of”. He also said that the release on other formats in the region would not be dependent on the success of the PlayStation versions.

Of the release on other formats, Wilson said that the company will “make an announcement sometime soon on the status of those platforms but we would expect them to go out later this year.”

Atari will not rule out partnerships with other publishers or platform holders in the future, said Wilson, although there are no such plans in the immediate future.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to maximise our franchises, so if they arrive and we think it’s the best opportunity to maximise long-term value, then yes, we’ll consider it. At this point, were not having any of those discussions, but we do consider them,” he concluded.

Big PHEW is right for me. Though it still seems like a dick move. And I read on one of the other threads that it wouldn’t help to send US versions of the 360 game because the consols won’t play them. Sorry y’all. I would have tried to help a few of you out (as money and time would allow).

Sorry for the earlier rant and most definitely a big sorry for you fans in Europe who have to wait for a later release. It is totally a dick move and I just don’t believe it. I really hate sony but their Bravia LCD’s are really nice. I wish that we only had one console to chose from and the console wars could be over.

We need console wars. Keeps the game market competitive. The problem here is that SONY thinks this will get more people to buy the PS3, or at least punish those who do not own one. All it will do is make people hate SONY even more. It’s a horrible PR move, especially so late in the game. If this had been the case the whole time then whatever, but to do it just over a month from release, that’s just plain mean. I would bet that if they do not see a backlash from this that we will start to see more of this kind of thing, perhaps see it in the States as well.

USA ! USA ! USA !!! Sorry for any European Ghostbusters out there. Seriously i’m sorry, it’s like the bad news from last year in august 2008…except it’s for the UK. I’m from the US and I feel sad that my fellow UK GBfans will have to wait some more then us. I bet there’s mass hysteria in the UK devision of GBfans. Well good luck on the waiting. Bye !

why be sorry for the rant. im not sorry for my rant. i was pissed and rightfully so. i understand the business why it was made, but doesnt mean i cant be mad bout it. exclusive games isnt going to win the “console wars” for SOny. part of it is the price of ps3 itself. its still kinda high for some to afford, and there are other reasons, but wont go into it.
