I’m currently looking for the last things I need to finish building my pack, and am debating on which light kit to buy. I’ve heard good things about both Exoray and Hyperdyne, does anyone have any advice?
Also, I’ve heard about a particular kit that involves whirling lights in the gun tip when the trigger is depressed, does anyone know which this is?
I’ve also heard good things about both of those, but myself I went with Proptronix’ light kits, for both my pack and wand, and I’m thrilled at the quality and cost.
ive only used exorays light kits in my packs (3 packs now), and i have to say his quality is top notch. the light kits are done up in a very professional manner. he also stands by his products 100 percent so that means a lot as well. i doubt there is anything wrong with the other sellers light kits, but exoray is the only one i have used.

Personally, I went with Exoray’s wand and pack kits and they are fantastic.
As to the whirling lights, Exoray has a set of LED’s in the wand tip. They rotate and flash several colors when the gun is “fired”. I got the deluxe light kit and it also throws a laser across the room. Nice little added bonus. But the flashing lights really make a cool effect in the acrylic barrel.
One more thing to add about Exoray’s set-up. I fiddled with the wand / lights quite a bit before getting everything packed in place and closed up. The fiddling was all my doing. The kits are really well designed. Everything is plug-and-play. He builds a solid, well designed and sturdy light set-up. TOP MARKS all around.

ok, when it comes to wand lights, there are a few choices:
Hyperdyne - top quality, has everything, but you have to pay for it.
Exoray - his wand lights are great, it has everything, including the flickering barrel lights, laser pointer and vibro motor.
Proptronix - haven’t seen his kits personally, all I know is that they to are very well made, easy to install and are similar to exoray’s.
R2DEVO - My personal choice, 15 yellow LED bar graph (1.5" x 0.2"), moves up and down randomly,white interior light, red SLO-BLO LED, two more white LEDs for front and top of gun box, custom start-up sequence (can be left out by request), no barrel lights, runs on 7-18V DC power source, 9V battery connector included,$60 + shipping. I like his the best because it seems more realistic than Exoray’s or proptronix, bar graph and lights moves and turn on randomly making it feel like your pack is ready to fire unstable proton streams. plus, no gay flickering barrel lights ( no offense).
Make it your self - there are various tutorials about how to make your own pack and gun lights, I know of a ebay seller who makes the moving bar graph along with manufacturers that make the proper circuit boards and parts you’ll need.
i built my own lights. they are fully upgradeable. just worked on the code some a few weeks ago. they should be available shortly. best thing? free of charge. you will have to buy the parts. will be selling completely built kits too thought.

I was actually thinking about open-sourcing the masks and parts lists to do the pack lights as well. Granted, if you don’t have the drive or know-how to make your own lights, a kit might be the way to go.
I’d go with either exoray or hyperdyne. the issue I have with proptronix pack lights is that both the powercell and cyclotron lights are on the same timer, so you have to make the powercell almost strobe to get the cyclotron lights at a decent speed

Which is the light kit that has the lights come on slowly and kind of sporadically when you start up the pack? I’m thinking specifically of the power cell lights, which, if I remember correctly, all light up randomly initially, and then start to scroll after.
Also, comparitively, which setup is cheapest / which is most expensive, and do you get what you pay for (is the cheapest set up terrible?)?

HoldinJohnson did mention R2DEVO had a custom start-up sequence, but I’m not sure if that’s the same sequence he meant or if it was a custom job that I saw. I just think it’s a really cool effect.

Yeah, 500 dollars seems a bit much for some lights. I even think Exoray’s are a bit to pricey, but I would buy them if I had the money. I may just get his gun lights and make my own pack lights.
I just looked through the Classifieds to find R2DEVO’s lights and they were the ones I was thinking of. And he charges ~$125 for pack and gun!

I dont know much about R2DEVO’s kits, but I know Proptronix’ gun kit has a startup feature that features flickering lights in the vents and bargraph. very cool
Exoray’s gun/pack light kits together are I believe about $300, depending on what options you choose for your gun kit
Proptronix’ gun/pack light kits together are $180 shipped.
I have used both exoray’s and proptronix and prefer proptronix because of it’s smaller size and a more accurate barrel light(the flicker of the light is more accurate to the films). a minor downside is it doesnt have a detachable bargraph light for the gun and only has 14 LED’s on the powercell board. while exoray’s gun and pack kits are entirely plug and play, proptronix’ kits feature some plug n play parts but there are also some that require a small screwdriver to install. still very simple.
exoray’s kit is very nice because it has an 8 LED barrel light, a beautiful drop-in bar graph light assembly and has an accurate 15 LEDs on the powercell board. but i found the gun kit board to be a very tight fit inside both hotshot’s gunbox and throwingchicken’s v2.0 gunbox, so tight that no matter how i arranged the wires, i practically had to stuff the wires and board into the gun and squeeze the bottom plate on while i tightened the screws. its possible the board may fit better in another seller’s, or your own scratchbuilt gunboxes

Don’t mean to be a thread-jacker, but that’s all great info. That the proptronix kit only has 14 LEDs kind of bothers me. R2’s has the 15, and I think it’s the cheapest, but I don’t think it looks like a piece of junk for that price either.

Bumped with a new question -
If you guys have seen MMM’s new gun kit, you know it doesn’t have a ridge framing the bar graph on the gun box like some other gun boxes out there. With Exoray’s kit, do you need that ridge, or is there an edge around the yellow lights that eliminates that need?

if you are going to use exorays kit, you will need to file/sand the window frame off of your gunbody. Exoray’s kit comes with the black bezel already attached to the light.
So in other words, it’s perfect for MMM’s new gun kit, which doesn’t have the bezel. Thanks, Kind! Just the answer I wanted!
