I got the chance to hold this mold yesterday. He’s lucky I didn’t stuff it in my bag and run. It is quite impressive.

Thanks Brock for the kind words.

(More progress as of today)

Taking advantage of the last of the warm weather left, I’ve finished the two vacuum-forming “tools” or molds for the goggles. Details and “snaps” castings have been sanded down, and the vent holes drilled for the deep details.

Right now, the imperfections have been covered with Bondo, and will be sanded down tomorrow. Also, I’m working with the updated faceplates for the real AN/PVS-5 frames that Vincenzo offered here.

More to come soon.

Fantastic work mate!!! I love ur progress on these!!

I’ve tried to edit after my last post, but I’ve meant to also thanks nick-a-tron, Demon Vice Commander, Dr.Dion, and Warrenzo for the kind words as well.

Loving the work Robert! Just when I am sourcing an old frame too!

MOD EDIT: This is not an interest thread, please do not inquire about pricing.

(NOTE: THIS IS JUST A PROGRESS THREAD; otherwise it would be on the FOR SALE section, coming up really soon, though.) Thanks Mods for the last posting.

As promised, more progress, with the first VACUUM-FORMED casting.

I couldn’t finish on Tuesday, as I was expecting… but lots of stuff has been ongoing in real-life, specially this past week, besides feeling really tired and physically sick (the FLU starting, perhaps?..). Anyway, FINALLY got the weekend to do this, and I was impressed myself of the result.

First casting, COMPLETE SUCCESS! Except for just ONE small detail, which I’ll mention on the last picture. First off… a REALLY ROUGH cut of the pieces, needed for two sets,

Then, a light rough trim, just for a better look,

And this is the only hiccup; I’ve had to make this slits at both sides of the frame at the bottom edge of the wider detail, in order to take the molds out of the castings, since they got stuck. These slits will be fused together and sealed from the inside before offering. I might come out with a method of taking them out without doing this slit.

As mentioned before; once this goes on the FOR SALE thread, I’ll be offering castings as a whole kit (ON HAND, not promising something I don’t really have, and complete kit picture to show once I’m done) that will include:

  • Batter cover mount detail (as you see in the pictures, that goes between the battery cover casting and the goggle frame,
  • Resin castings of the Power Switch and Battery Cover,
  • Real Thumb Knobs with screws/nuts,
  • Clear Decal set for the bottom of the frames (pic below),

And MAYBE I’ll do a regular decal set for the lenses and frame, not sure about the metallic decals, though… still thinking about it. I’ll be making a run of 10 frame sets in within two weeks to offer later on, since I do this on a “weekend / time-off” basis, with more castings coming up later, depending on demand.

NOT INCLUDED:

  • Lenses
  • Straps
  • Snaps
  • Padding
  • ”Detail” Hex thumbscrews for faceplate

All holes will be pre-drilled (small, as guides), for you to add snaps and details as you wish.

More coming up soon.

They look pretty damn good! Hopefully you can find a way to get them off the molds without cutting them.

By the way, just curious how thick of plastic you’re using, and is it ABS?

Dude these are FAN-■■■■■■-TASTIC!!!

I love them!! Well done.

Wow this looks to be a amazing kit, can’t wait to this to on sale.

I am very impressed so fare with this thread, keep up the good work.

Any idea what’s causing the casting to stick to the mold? Could adding a slight slop to the line improve the ability to remove the mould? I admit it’s not an idea I like, having to damage part of the casting in order to remove it, as it could undermine the structural integrity of the casting.

I think it’s due to either some imperfections on the mold (undercuts, as it’s called), or maybe due to the material of the mold itself, even though I’m using BABY POWDER as mold release. I completely agree with you, if I alter the molds, the integrity of the REAL FRAME shape could be compromised… that’s why I didn’t go with my wood, scratch-built mold because it was TOO BIG compared to the real one.

Someone from the ALGB suggested me to do a two-part molds, but I’ve mentioned that doing so will be difficult due to the cold weather outside, and I don’t have a closed garage. I will fix the slit by EPOXY them… no one will see it or it will be barely visible.

Anyway, I’ve just ordered BLACK RESIN to make the battery cover and interruptor switch castings. Posting more later on.

Cant wait to get my PaiR Rob and Ill be sure to have Caitlin model em when I get them OK

LOL, THAT will be my BONUS!

This is a stunning project!

Sorry for the lack of updates, being sick in the past two weeks and the weather is not helping either. The plastic is actually Black HIPS (High Impact Poly Styrene), @ .060" thick. My vacumm-forming machine / method is not strong enough to pull ABS, since I’m using the SHOP-VAC method, and not a vacuum pump.

I’m in the waiting stage for the DOT snappers; I’ve decided to include them with the kit.

Looks superb. I shall be watching progress [And the for sale thread. :-} section.]

-MORE UPDATES-

Finally, got to work on the castings of the face and inside plates for the goggles, not to mention another try on the goggle frame… SUCCESS!!! :gbdance:

First, the casting of the face plates and inner plates for the AN/PVS-5 goggles; the inside plates have the hole guides, while the faceplates SHOULD have them, but I’ll leave that to the owners,

Now, I finally figured out the way to take the mold out of the casting without making the slits on the corners… by cutting away the “mouth” area of the casting, that way will allow me to manipulate the castings and remove the molds (with a little muscle power, though) without damaging either one,

More to come soon.

Fantastic work mate!!!

Well done!! Can’t wait to see these in the For Sale section!!
