I don’t know if anybody around here still watches this show ( a lot of people I know stopped watching after the 1st couple of seasons) but I am really excited about the upcoming 2 hour movie next week titled Absolute Justice.
This will mark the first appearance of actual superheroes on the show. (I don’t think Green Arrow counts since he and the rest of the justice league haven’t really gone public yet.) It will also be the first time that the JSA will have been in the national spotlight or even depicted on screen I believe.
For those who don’t know, the JSA or Justice Society of America is the original superhero team created in the early 40’s staring the most popular of the Golden Age superheroes. Predating the Justice league by about 20 years, the original lineup included: the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Sandman, Dr. Fate, the Spectre, Hourman, and the Atom. Later members included Starman and Dr. Midnite. Huge stars like Superman and Batman appeared every now then as honorary members but never really took the spotlight from the other characters. Wonder Woman even joined but due to being a woman in the 40’s she started off being little more than a secretary to the Society.
Sandman, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and Green Lantern will definitely be in the show (though probably in a dimished capacity for Green Lantern since there is a movie about another GL being made right now) along with Star Girl who is a modern day successor to both Starman and another hero called the Star-Spangeld Kid. There are a few preview trailers online and I have been watching them over and over.
I am very excited and cannot wait to see this tv-movie which airs on the CW Feb. 5th. I am a huge fan of all comic books, DC in particular, and I think it is great that some of these older forgotten heros are finally getting some love.
So, does anybody else out there remember these guys or care one way or the other that they are coming to the small screen?
I’m really excited for this! Smallville is my favorite show! Though I think I’d count Green Arrow as a real superhero, it’s still exciting to see Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and Stargirl on the show with Clark and Oliver. Also, I’m hoping to see more clips involving Jay Garrick and the old Green Lantern than just their artifacts. Hawkgirl, too!
I know the first few seasons of the show were a little shaky, but I think it’s really gotten better and better since season 4 ended. I also realize a lot of people dislike it because of the things that don’t quite flow with canon, like Clark and Lois already working together at the Daily Planet, but I still love it!
Anyway, I think Absolute Justice is going to rock!
In interviews they said that the reason for no one remembering them would be explained in the movie itself. My money is that something big went down back in the day, which put them out of comission and caused the government to get involved and make a cover up.
At least that’s what I figure, since the movie also involves the introduction of Amanda Waller and the Checkmate organization into the Smallville continuity.
I also read that in terms of the Smallville universe and its timeline, the JSA would have been active in the 1970’s. But who knows yet why they haven’t been mentioned or what made them stop being active, assuming from the previews that they have.
I really liked it, and I thought Martian Manhunter was awesome! He’s def my favorite hero on the show after Clark. He had some killer one liners, and was definitely badass. Dr. Fate was also pretty cool, but I wish his helmet didn’t look so plasticy!
I’ve been a Smallville fan since season 4. I have always worked on the days that the show was playing, and kind of got out of the super hero scene when the show premiered. Then when season 4 ended and came out on DVD the first 3 seasons were only 20 bucks each and I bought season one just to see if I liked it. 24 hours later I bought the other 3 seasons and I’ve been on top of it ever since. This season has been by far the best in my opinion. Clark is wearing a semblance of a costume now and accepting his Kryptonian heritage. Justice blew me away, and really pushed feel of the comics back into the show. I too loved getting the glimpse of Martian Manhunter in his true form. Then Warrior came out and it was great in 3 regards that made it one of my favorite episodes. 1: Lois in the Stormtrooper armor at the comic convention, though it didn’t fit her AT ALL, it was still fantastic. 2: The drawing of the Red Blue Blur the kid gave Clark was awesome. 3: Clark running out of the room and ripping open his shirt to reveal the “S” shield… it made me as excited as I was when I was little and my mom would take me to the comic shop and get the newest issue of Superman. I can’t wait to see where this show goes next. I feel like this show has a lot of life in it still. I mean, Superman has had at least 2, sometimes more, monthly issues since 1938. They literally have 71 years worth of story they can tell, plus anything they come up with on their own. Most of the people that say the show is dead and should have ended with season 7 haven’t even watched the show since season 2 or 3. I was talking with my wife a couple of years ago and said that when clark moved to Metropolis they should have changed the name of the show to Metropolis. To me, the only thing that doesn’t fit anymore is the title. But I don’t even care about that. So, abruptly ending my rambling, I’m hoping for a season 10 and beyond.
I don’t mind the title - after all, the show is about Clark’s origins, and his roots come from Smallville. Keeping the title the same reminds you that it’s about his roots and not “Superman: The Show,” even if it’s just a curly hair and a new costume away from fully becoming just that. But I absolutely see your point (and your wife’s!).
Lois in that stormtrooper costume was awesome! I actually liked it a lot better than that horrible Wonder Woman thing she did. Something about her hair just made it fail for me.
Also, I know some people too who last watched it when Lana was a kung fu witch, or a sorority vampire, and thought it sucked because of that and stopped watching it and still think it’s the same. But the show has come a LONG way since then! I’m pretty sure if they do any more seasons, (Tom is signed on for one more, but not Allison. Hmm…) then 10 will be the last one. But I think 10 seasons is a great run, and I’m so glad it’s made it this far! I’m just hoping the finale this season isn’t such a depressing one like last season. That fight with Doomsday, though it tied things up nicely with the comics at the end (putting him underground), was a little lightweight and cheap.
I agree. To be honost with you, a lot of people didn’t like the show because of the goofy stuff like Lana being a Vampire, then there were the people that got pissed when they found out Lana was leaving. I hated Lana, and I think the overall show has become much better since she left. Not because she’s gone, that’s just a coincidence. But Its true, the show has done nothing but got better since she left.
And yea, the Doomsday thing sucked. I didn’t want to see Doomsday that early in the Smallville story, but seeing him on screen in the “flesh”, and his growl… that was the best thing ever. Then when he fought Clark… lame…I understand it though I guess. Clark, while still super strong, was pretty weak by superman standards when the show first started. The first time he got shot left bruises. But, Clark had 7 years to develop his powers from what he had when the show started. Davis had maybe a few months from “no powers” to Doomsday. He was pretty weak too. I can’t wait to see what else happens with this show.
After watching Absolute Justice I am very curious to see where the show will go.
Hopefully more heroes will show up since Checkmate said that it’s goal was to bring the JSA out of retirement.
Speaking of Checkmate, did anyone else’s thoughts go directly to Darksied when Waller talked about needing all the heroes they can get to survive the coming “Apocaylpse”?
That would be one gell of a way to end the series.
Yeah, I did think of Darkseid! That would be interesting… though I don’t think Clark can POSSIBLY take him on, and probably neither can anybody else at this point.
[Spoiler alert!] That’s controversial… I really enjoyed it, but some people didn’t like it. Clark destroyed a building Zod was putting together with his heat vision and it collapsed while Zod was giving an interview about it. Some people said Clark was effectively being a terrorist, but others say because he wasn’t doing it to terrorize anybody, he wasn’t. I thought it was awesome though.
I’ve always thought that if the show didn’t end with Clarke suiting up to take on the world as Superman that the whole thing was for naught. It would be the biggest rippoff of all time not to do this right.
