The storyboard shows a male character, “Lane”, on the ledge trying to get to Oscar before Nanny Janosh gets him…
Was Lane a boyfriend of Dana’s instead of Peter rekindling their thing? Was he a generic babysitter? Was he a “boyfriend” Janine had over before they went with Tully?
Any insight is appreciated, this is interesting!
It probably refers to the stuntman, Bill Lane.
Lane was the name of the female lead character before Sigourney Weaver signed on. Murray even tested with a few actresses for the role.
In earlier drafts of the script, Venkman was the one out on the ledge trying to get Oscar. It looks like the storyboard was revised with a text label when Lane replaced Venkman on the ledge.
Yeah, looking at the close-up of the female, it has “Lane watches, horrified”. You’re right, they re-labelled Venkman.

Well, my hat is off to anyone who knew the names of the stunt-people for the film off the top of their head.
But after looking over the images, it’s clear Lane is a character name not a cast/crew name. Note that baby is baby and Nanny is Nanny, consistently throughout. They’re not referred to as ‘Deutschendorf twin’ or ‘Macnicol’.
And I had never heard about the female character being named Lane before Weaver committed. I’m assuming she was originally Dana, then when they thought they couldn’t get Sig, they just changed a couple of letters?
But this is an interesting point in the development process. Lane is still called Lane, so no Sigourney yet. But they’ve already decided this scene will not have Peter, so the masculine art has been re-labelled.
I wonder why they decided to take one of the returning actors OUT of a dramatic moment and give it to a new cast member instead? The impact of the mother losing her own child?
