St. Louis Kid had a lot of his parts cut on a waterjet. I can’t remember if he posts here though so I don’t know whether or not he’ll chime in.

yeah, what is CNC??
I think it stands for Computer Numeric Controlled, or something like that. Basically, it’s an automated system for machining parts. You just program the machine and it does the rest.
As said CNC machines are machines (mills, lathes, waterjets, laser cutters, punches etc…) that are interfaced directly to computers… You load a CAD file into the computer and the computer controls the machine and creates the parts…

I don’t think so, personally. A CNC is just a tool just like a dremel or a chop saw, and a CNC doesn’t take all the work out of it. You still have to do the actual design, and that’s the where the real creativity comes in anyway. Personally, I think that anything that makes the actual production easier/faster can be good, IMO.
That’d be sweet though, just transfer Stefan’s plans to CAD and feed them in, absolute perfect replica would come out…somebody should definately try that!!!

With a real expensive and large CNC 6 axis mill, you very well could…

I do the metal work by hand and would love to have one. But I have yet to find the money tree…or catch that damn leprechaun with my pot of gold. BASTARD! ![]()

I plan to cnc some parts of the pack: Powercell, Gearbox, gun mount box.
Maybe: Spacer (with some modifications) and the cyclotron but without N Filter.
I want them milled out of solid plastic but this is very time consuming, since you cant mill fast due to the danger of overheating the plastic during the milling process.
Second thing is, that many companys do parts only when you order…1.000 pieces or so.
The world is not easy for a private hobby prop or modelbuilder.
I keep you updated IF the whole process starts.

If you had it milled out of solid plastic, you’d probably want to hollow it out afterwards. A solid plastic proton pack, even though it is plastic, might be pretty heavy… I don’t know, just a thought. ![]()

Right now I’m in the middle of making a master for a proton pack mold, and I’ve been using the CNC router at the company where I work to make quite a few parts. It’s a store fixture/woodworking company, so we deal primarily with wood. Bascially the entire lower half of the pack I’ve made on the CNC, using solid MDF wood, and the upper half of the pack I’ve made by hand using solid mahogany. Interestingly, the upper half has been a lot more work. The accuracy of the machine is WONDERFUL when it comes to the cyclotron, the spacer underneath with the flat edges, and various discs and washers.
This thing is going to weigh a ton, but the idea is that it won’t get destroyed during the molding process.
As I wrote before, I won’t let the whole pack to be milled out of a single, solid block.
