Conventions Question

Hey guys. I have some questions for the convention going crowd. I am researching convention policies for a project. I work with some of conventions and shows in Alberta, and wanted to compare our policies.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any conventions or shows that have their policies posted on their webpages (or if you happen to have a copy of them lying around). Particularily weapon policies.

All I have been able to find is that all weapons must be holstered, and that real looking weapons are not allowed. Kind of vague. I also know that at Sci-Fi cons, some things, like pointing a Star Wars blaster at someone playfully, is very acceptable.

Basically, I am looking for detailed policies, or anyone who can comment of some of the details.

I really hope you guys can help with this, as I have spent almost a year working on this, and still have some unanswered questions.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Hey Scooter,

I PMed you with the information you requested.

Hope it helps you.

You could always take the time to simply email the convention sites or contact them and ask for a copy of their policy… Just because it’s not listed on the sites in clear view doesn’t mean they won’t provide it if asked…

I absolutely think that they would supply their policies upon request. However, I have experienced (at least in the Anime Con circle) that the policies are undeveloped and forbid weapons.

Specifically, what I am looking for is that clause that allows a storm trooper to point his blaster at someone else, while not allowing someone with a wooden sword to swing it around.

Scooter,

That would be a question of common sense that would be addressed to the Chief of the Security/Safety for the Convention.

I know at the Anime convention I attend. Things like that can be done for posing for pictures, but usually they have a set area to allow photos to be taken so that type of posing isn’t misunderstood.

So, what you are asking is very general and vague and only the Cosplay/Costuming Area Head and Chief of Security/Safety can address it.

My advice is to take what you find and formulate your own policy. That is what I did when I first started working at that Anime Convention.

I hope this helps out some.
