Crazy 4K disc question...

So, like all of you, I have many MANY copies of the first 2 movies… and, funnily enough, after 2 years, I’m FINALLY getting around to watching the 4K version from the collector’s boxset.

Low and behold, the 4K disc doesn’t work in any of the 4K players I’ve tried (2 PS5s, 3 Xboxes, and a dedicated 4K player). Now, I know I’m YEARS late to getting it swapped out from Sony, so, here’s my question:

Is there ANY difference between the Collector’s boxset (the one that looks like a trap) and the GB1/GB2 4K release that came out a little while before it (the black and red steel book where they use the logo where Mooglie is holding up 1 finger on one hand and 2 in the other)? I’ve tested the other discs and they work fine.

Hmm. I think the only thing the 2019 steelbook has that the 2022 ultimate edition does not is the restored RGB pilot.

The 2022 ultimate edition has the GB1 Preview cut, Ivan and Jason commenting on two GB1 scenes, 8 auditions for Dana, the Behind Closed Doors doc, GB1 dailies, the full TV broadcast version of GB1, Ivan and Jason commenting on 2 GB2 scenes, 19 GB2 deleted scenes, soundtrack promo with Edelman, full TV broadcast version of GB2, Afterlife sneak peek from the set. I’m sure all of these will be on the next set.

That’s pretty odd your 4K player won’t play the 4K disc. What brand is your player? Do your video game consoles require you to download any patches/updates maybe? Are your HDMI cables for 4K or standard Blu-ray?

Right, but all of those are on a separate disc if I remember correctly.

BUT, yeah, it’s ONLY the GB1 4K disc that didn’t work in the Ulimate Edition. The GB1 regular disc works fine and the 4K versions of the other 2 movies work fine as well. I’m using a PS5 as MY player and I actually drove to friends’ houses to try out the discs on their stuff. So, yeah… just gonna swap the discs out from my steel book combo and the ultimate edition and call it a day. Hell, they even LOOK the same, so it’s no big deal for me.

Oh okay, then yeah, no different between both GB1 discs to my knowledge!

Perfect! Just what I needed to hear to make the switch.

Just to be sure I checked Paul’s review and he notes the 2019 GB1 4K disc is better than the 2022 GB1 4K disc in that:

I went a little cross eyed but I think the gist is

2019 GB1 4K disc: has 1999 commentary, fan commentary, trivia track, Slimer mode

2022 GB1 4K disc: does not have any of that (you have to use the Blu-ray GB1 disc) but there’s 5.1 and original 2.0 mixes as well as Atmos

Dolby vision for some movies is a big upgrade and from my understanding is only for the collectors box. Not even on the latest release.. but not sure. I remember there were complaints about the original 4k highlights being blown out.

I’ll compare the two 4ks later. I haven’t gotten around to checking them either. Probably not big difference, not everything plays Dolby vision anyways.

I really just wanted the box for thr book and the TV edit just in case I want to play for younger kids

I went back and watched the 4k from the 35th and the box set. Was a little worried mine wasn’t going to work either. Watched the hotel scene from both.. maybe the Dolby vision was better. However I don’t own an OLED, didn’t do any side by sides. Not sure it’s worth hunting down the box set just for Dolby vision.

After watching the new Aliens 4k. Don’t think I’d mind some A.I. noise reduction. Some of the zoomed in dark scenes are pretty grain heavy

If you’ve got the proper setup, Dolby Vision is a noticeable upgrade.
