Did Egon steal the PKE meter from the University?

Okay, hear me out…

So when the University cancelled the guy’s research grant and took all their equipment, how come they didnt take the PKE meter?

Egon had it in the Library scene (so it’s not something they built after they went in to business using Ray’s re-mortgages) but when they returned to the Uni they took Ray’s camera and video camera (and everything else by the looks of it) But not the PKE meter? I have assumed it was something that was built by Spengs’ using funds from the grant… so technically it belongs to the university, right?

Maybe he just built another one?

Maybe he built that one with his own money?

But I suspect old Egon slipped it in to his pocket when he realised that they were being shut down, the bloody thief! :sigh:

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

More importantly, what happened to the video tape and 35mm film from their cameras? Did the university just throw away mankind’s first authentic recording of a ghost? They might not have gotten kicked out if the board of trustees had actually looked at the footage. Then again, if they stayed at the university, they would never have become the Ghostbusters…

he probably built it long before they were sponsored by the university.

i would imagine they stole the parts for the proton packs though.

They had the movie camera for the commercial. If I had to guess at fanon I’d say they either owned a lot of the equipment themselves and were just being kicked out of the university facilities or they bought it from the university since they didn’t want it anyway.

Ahhh, but they made the advert AFTER taking out the loan to start the Business (and buying the firehouse)… so they probably bought a new one since they figured it was going to be useful!

Same goes for the PKE, and Egon’s Calculator, and his stethoscope…

If it was funded by the university, he should have given it back.

There’s the possibility that Egon created it on his own without university funds, or, that he bought it back from the university.

Some of the equipment in the University was later seen in the Firehouse too.

Maybe that’s what Egon was off doing when Venkman and Stantz had their whole “karma” speech? Egon was pleading for their equipment back from dean Yager…

I always thought that Ray just handed the camera over to the guy that moving to add to all their stuff on the curb I mean Yeager’s line is “No, you’re being moved off campus.” There was no mention of confiscation of their equipment.

this makes sense to me.

That was a way of saying they were fired, as evidenced by the line “This University will no longer continue any funding of any kind for your groups activities.”

My guess would be that anything the guys bought with University funds (which would have been documented) would have been taken from them.

The Ghostbusters have never done anything criminal.

He also said “Your grants have run out.” A grant is money that you don’t have to repay. So if they were given grants to buy equipment, then the equipment belongs to them.

What DarkSpectre says is what I was thinking before I read his post. It’s what makes the most sense to me in that particular situation.

Also … it’s just a movie. Egon still has the PKE meter because the script says he does.

Ah yea… “The Board of Regents has decided to terminate your grant, you are to vacate these premises immediately”, that explains it.

In one of the novelizations, Egon is at a phone phone calling his parents telling them he was kicked out of school while the others were drinking. Always reminded me of an RGB episode were a demon is forcing them to reveal secrets to save their souls or something along those lines. When its Egon’s turn he says, “I once got an A- in college and my parents wouldn’t talk to me for a week!”

I like this concept, I could see this being in the movie. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t facetiously ask what a phone phone is.

Anyway, the grant explains it. A grant is a grant and the money is yours. So the equipment would not be confiscated.

As a recipient of a few, I agree with the grant as an explanation. But aside from what’s canon and what’s not, when I was reading over a journal from Spengler’s Spirit Guide online, Spengler noted how he went to the Winchester Mansion during his time in graduate studies and got no readings with his PKE Meter, sorta implying he built it way before partnering with Stanz and Venkman and Columbia. I thought it’d be interesting if seeing the PKE Meter is what convinced Stanz and Venkman to join up with him and also the Regents to approve of their grant in the first place.

That’s interesting, because it reminds me of something in West End Game’s verison of Tobin’s Spirit Guide, where there’s mention of Egon visiting Chumburo House , which he apparently visited as an “undergrad” but all of his notes were “uninteresting”. Nothing about a PKE Meter in the entry, though.

Spoiler for Fan Fic Crap people might not care about:

[spoiler]I participated on a story which kind of takes part of both scenarios–the investigation of Chumburo House becomes the test run of the prototype (“Model 0”) PKE Meter. If anybody cares enough, it’s here:

another idea is since the university would no longer be supporting paranormal studies, then they really have no use for the equipment, so it would be either sold or auctioned off to which the ghostbusters could have bought some of it back
