Hey all, just wanted to share I am working on a pack and I am using a tecnique I havnt heard of too many using on here… Pepakura (Kinda) for those who dont know Pepakura is Japanese paper folding…you can make literally ANYTHING out of this tecnique…but instead of paper I am using a more study cardboard and covering that in fiberglass resin…Hope it works out well if it does then WOOT because this will be a cheaper way to make lightweight fairly detailed packs with PLENTY of room for electronics… Will keep yall posted!

Well it isnt exactly pepakura… I just saw where people were doing Master Chief Halo helmets and I got to thinking this could work on something else… So I am using Norm G’s plans and doing main construction out of Cardboard and hot glue (Thats right sounds scary huh?) and that is going to be covered completley in fiberglass… I did the first coat today and Im hoping it goes well… I’m probably gonna rock about 3- 4 coats of resin over the cardboard until I think its strong enough… as for pics I have to get ahold of a camera… but yeah maybe this experimental thing will make building packs alot cheaper on the materials side… (Now the motherboard and box beneath the Ion arm are still wooden… and the cyclotron is still made from a pie pan)
I attempted to make gun grips out of a gumout bottle but apparently cant use a hacksaw straight so I may have to breakdown and purchase grips… (Ive already been speaking with some peopls about that sooooo yeah…updates as they happen)
are you making the thing a little smaller than it needs to be so that when you add the fiberglass/resin it will not be oversized?

and another “oops” While working on a piece I walked away to let the resin set and it set to my workbench so when I tried to pull it off it ripped a bit…still its repairable…Live and learn right?
Just an update…things are actually coming along pretty well…there are a few spots where the resin made the cardboard bubble…but some bondo can fix that quickly…
and I have ALOT of leftover toy car track that I used for the bumper…I think I am goint to use some of the leftover pieces for the gun mount because they have that bottom where you can connect multiple pieces together and it seems pretty sturdy… Oh yeah…after it is said and done if anyone needs car track let me know… I dont want all that I bought to go to waste…

It’s not a bad way to go at all. I’ve come across the asme technique recenty and KIND OF used some of the concepts. I’m working on Cardboard Halo armour at the moment and have done an Iron Man face plate.
I would check out youtube. There are even some REALLY young kids who are doing a hell of a lot better at Halo prop making at their age then I was at Proton Packs around that age, using this particular technique…■■■■■■■ me off. :sigh:
This is the new way of building,I just built a Boba Fett bucket from cardstock and then I fiberglassed the inside,that thing isn’t getting a dent anytime soon.
Hmm, I know this is jumping a little bit more on to the pepakura, but you can transfer 3D models to Pepakura, then unfold. I’ve done it twice, and its a time consuming process (a Gundam helm I was working on had over 12000 folds!)
I will say that I do not have a lot of experience in 3d modeling - but there are two great 3d models on google sketchup’s warehouse. Here] they are. If anyone wants to slim line them down I’d love to tackle putting one together.
