Extreme Ghostbusters

Got another stupid question for everyone. Why are the Extreme Ghostbusters so unpopular? I liked the series, personally. I grew up with both the movies and the REAL Ghostbusters, and thought the EGB would be a great way to reach a new and younger generation of Ghostheads.

I’ll admit that there were several places where the series sucked eggs, but towards the end I was really inpressed, especially with the last episode and the return of the RGBs.

Anyway- just trying to find out if there was any special reason the EGBs were hated, or if y’all just didn’t like it.

i have to admit that i never watched it. i saw some comercials but i thought the drawings were too sharp and edgy. i didnt like the way it looked so i didnt watch it.

I think it was mainly because it underminded what the originals were all about. It was basically saying “yeah, there was some other douchebags before, but now its the EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS! With a very Politically correct team! We have a black guy, a white guy, a chick, who is also a goth, and a handicapped person! Wow, we’re REALLY better than those other guys because we’re young, hip and kool. (thumbs up) Watch our show!!!”

idk, maybe thats just how I interpretted it, lol

I never got to see the show personally, but the gear always confused me from the commercials. I then heard that the reason they had different gear was because there was a “new bread” of ghosts that were immune to the original packs. That and I could never find out how their new gear worked. It had little plug in things on the back of the guns and the traps didn’t need the stomp pedal, and I can’t find any information anywhere that can explain how the gear worked.

I’ve also noticed that fans of the EGB’s don’t build the packs from that show as their props they usually build the regular proton pack. That is what confuses me about them. They say they like the show, but they won’t build the gear.

I would agree with just about everything stantztheman has said here. But I would also like to add that I think EGB took everything that was cool about ghostbusters and killed it, it was no longer believable. The original Ghostbusters fit into the real world. They’re equipment looked high tech, but was still crude like it was home made. There was just a sense with them that it was all possible. I think all believability was lost with EGB, they might as well been flying around with jet packs, busting ghosts. The whole concept was not intended to fit into the real world, but to be a politically correct cartoon for kids with new super equipment that looked more like something that came from outer space rather than Egon’s lab. Maybe I’m being a hater, but it isn’t the original guys and I just don’t care for it. I think the only cool think they did, and it was just to keep old school fans interested, was keep Egon around as a mentor. Then bring back the original guys for series finally… Did I mention I didn’t like the animation either.

… and they made slimer look really scary

wel atm im desperate to get this show on dvd… It was nowhere near asa good as rgb but i really enjoyed it…

Same Here I really liked it I was always wondering why they didnt make a garret action figure

Anything that has the word “EXTREME” in it is a peice of shit! It’s the word they tack onto everything they want to apeal to generation “X”, it’s like in the 80’s when they wanted something to be “cool” they just put a pair of raybands on it and a backwards baseball cap and sometimes throw in a skateboard (see: The simpson’s episode 167 “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show” they do a great job making fun of this)

It just shows ignorance on the part of the design team and it’s insulting to the audience. Also anything that tries too hard to be politically correct is crap! It is insulting to minorities and handicapped individuals to add them as token characters thinking this alone will make it marketable to them, or keep everybody happy. This is a prime example of what happens when a marketing team, as opposed to creative individuals creates a cartoon show. For more examples of “EXTREME” crap look at what’s been done to the Looney Tunes characters

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6989380 and has anyone seen The animated batman lately Batman the animated series was great but now they got all “EXTREME” with that too. Joker looks like a member of Insane Clown Posses and the Riddler looks like Marilyn Manson! I cannot wait for this marketing fad to end, it is destroying everything that was once good.

Boycott anything that uses the word “EXTREME”!!! I do.

Unluckly they dubbed and transmitted that sh@t over here in italy too. Boy, how much I’ve cried seeing that rubbish. It was like killing the ghostbusters and everything they rapresented when I was a young kid.

I don’t know what they had in mind…

But wait a minute, you people were talking about an episode when the real ghostbusters go to visit the extreme ones. Which episode? Because only a few o’them were broadcast here.

Who the hell is the “Riddle” in batman??

Because joker is joker but riddle…?

In the heat of passion and hatred I misspell things, I “The Riddler”

It was a two part episode, toward the end of the Extreme Ghostbusters series, that featured the REAL Ghostbusters. I believe the episodes were called “Back in the Saddle” parts 1 and 2.

I think he ment “Riddler.” The guy that wears green with a question mark… Atleast that’s what he used to wear. Maybe it’s different now, I don’t know, I don’t watch this new crap.

Oops! Sorry Keaton Kohl, I think we posted the "Riddler answer at the same time.

When I clicked reply, nobody had answered yet. My bad.

ah ok, now I got it. The name in italian is… well… Saw!! like the movie saw! Enigmista!

It’s hard to put a finger on what exactly made many fans dislike Extreme Ghostbusters so much… here’s my understanding of it:

Equipment/Car/Charaters design: Something I champion as the poorest conceived part of the show, a lot of the design. The old RGB equipment was put into the cupboards because it was ‘under powered’. This seemed a rather poor justification for what I felt was a poorer system… I’ll never believe a cartridge based system is more powerful then the built in cyclotron system in the long run… but they could have easily retired the older equipment because ‘it’s out of date’ or ‘potentially dangerous to use after 6 years of being stored away’. It felt a little… snobbish, the way the new equipment was brought in and the old taken out of active service. In addition, while some might have called it silly, Ecto-2 could have been of use in some episodes.

The Ecto-1, one of the primary reasons I figure there were legal problems behind the show… it by far was changed the most and the only design feature that made it a Cadillac was the tail fins. It seemed obvious the car was redesigned in order to fly under the radar of legal licencing fees and if you’re not willing or able to pursue something as iconic as Ecto-1… what are you willing to pursue? It might have been better just to have retired the car fully and bring in a new one… even at the risk of alienating fans.

The character designs were a little unusual… some felt that the RGBs had been aged too much as it had aonly ben six years since the last RGB episode…

Laziness: Coupled with the Ecto-1 remarks, the show hardly hit all cylinders when it came to originality, firstly some could say several of the stories borrowed partly or fully from RGB episodes and that they weren’t able to create a whole series of original stories.

In addition, animation wise the logos would often be drawn as a empty prohibition symbol… the animators not bothering to draw in the ghost… and even further that a mannequin of Venkman had its face ditially blurred… adding more credence of possible legal problems.

Furthermore, you would actually see characters get reused in the backgrounds which just seemed incredibly lazy… like the animators only designed 15 or so characters for the show and would pick and choose which ones reappeared there… even if the design wasn’t playing the same character.

The Company: We hardly ever saw the Ghostbusters get paid or hassle customers for their fee… we saw them on the verge of bankruptys alot but hardly any time was shown to them getting their deserved payment.

The Characters: It is easy to see why some will call the XGBs politically correct… there were a wide selection of the New York demograph which seemed a little unrealistic… but you have to consider your personal views on that… Still, few of them in the cartoon seemed to have redeeming features that made you want them to survive every episode.

It’s a wide mix of things really, and there’s plenty more then the ones I’ve listed.

Another prime one, is the belief that the whole thing was designed simply to promote a toy line.

Since it was given an extension by the fanfic writers and artists, I’ve come to enjoy the series as a whole… but it needed more refining before it was released to the masses.

When I was in school studying animation, one of my instructors had been hired to do some concept designs for extreme ghostbusters. I wish that I could have stolen his portfolio (one because he was just an ass, but 2 to show the designs he had come up with). He tried to stay true to the original concept of RGB, but the execs had told him that they wanted something more modern, something more hip. The second set of drawings just sucked ass.

As far as why this show blows so much is because of backroom politics. There was a book about Spider-man, hit the market around the same time as the release of the first movie, that talked about the spider-man animation series. The writer for the show had great ambitions for it because he loved the characters, but the toy companies and the studios fought him on every turn. the show became more of an opportunity to sell more toys ( as kingpin stated for EGB)

my own opinion, if the execs had gone with the original designs my instructor had come up with, the animation would not have been so bad. But you still have the upword battle of the studio execs wanting to please everyone so they will utterly destroy the original concept of the characters to make them appeal to just about every group on the face of the planet, as well as fight with the toy makers who saw the show as a way to just make a quick buck. EGB had potential, I saw that and even pushed aside all the negative aspects of it to really enjoy where the writers wanted to go with it. But after learning about the inner workings of television animation, it makes me feel sorry for the writers of any show that carries such a high market value title such as Ghostbusters. Just my two cents on the matter

It would have been interesting to see those early designs… RGB stylised XGBs… heh.

It’s ironic when you think about it, only three years separate XGB and one of Disney’s all time greatest shows Gargoyles

Great animation from a majority of the episodes (At least the majority I’ve been able to watch thus far), beautiful background artwork… and rolling plots… something possibly learned from Babylon 5.
