First off let me just state that I?m not a fan of Fan Fiction. I don?t like it (that doesn?t reflect it?s quality). So let the mockery of me working on a type of Fan Fiction begin. I?m working on a little project of a remake (re-envision and/or re-interpretation applies as well) of the Ghostbuster franchise. I?m already all to well aware of the level of protection the rights to the franchise has around it from everyone (including from it?s creators and one another). But alas, I continue my project and wanted to tap into a little bit into the key demograph for what you could call a little market research. I figure a good way to get it right would be to ask those most dedicated for their honest opinion. And yes, for the time being I am going to only keep my ear to this forum to keep the feedback (if any) focused and easy to digest. Let me go ahead and list some story elements that are set in stone.
Elements that remain the same
Set in New York City, NY
Takes place in either 1983 or 1984
Ghostbuster?s HQ is an old fire house
Ecto-1 is a 59 Cadillac Hearse
Secretary named Janine Melnitz
Four Ghostbusters (Venkman, Spengler, Zedemore, Stanz, possibly five in Tully)
The New
Dr. Peter Venkman is a radio DJ (The Warriors style with an occult twist)
Dr. Egon Spengler is a physics professor at Columbia University
Winston Zedemore is his student
Dr. Raymond Stanz is an ex FBI investigator (X-Files style)
Dana Barrett is engaged to mayoral candidate Walter Peck
That?s not all the details I?m working on but that?s all I?m ready to share (pending the temperature of the feedback). The villain is yet to be developed, I want to perfect it without infringing on Gozer or Vigo. The style I’m aiming towards is a dryer darker humor and a scarier more intense atmosphere. Any feedback would be very appreciated and know that it?s a work in progress.
Villain- Sam Hain, an awesome character from the cartoon, that had the undeveloped potential of being more sinister than Gozer or Vigo.
The episode, “When Halloween was Forever” (Sam Hain’s first appearance) could have been turned into something extremely scary, deep and full of darkness.

I really like the idea of Venkman as a radio DJ idea. Since GB3 is titled “Hellbent” I had an idea for a scene with the new GB’s listening to ACDC’s “Highway to Hell”. Venkman could be playing that on the radio.
Dana Barrett engaged to Peck sounds extremely odd to me.
Was he seen in that episode “Citizen Ghost” that came with the DVD set? That description sounds like one of the ghosts that was playing cards in the containment unit when Slimer went in to get Shifter.
Your right, except the episode you’re refering to is called “Partners in Slime.” It is the second episode on the DVD and that is the character I’m refering to… But Sam Hain was introduced in the episode “When Halloween was Forever” and then again in “Halloween 2 1/2.”
i would not go with the peck-barret engagement…i wouldnt be right..it would be neat to bring him in..but not engaged to dana…i drew a pic of samhain for my movie..its called ghostbusters:samhains might(the smahains might part is just temporary until i get a better one)…anyway…i could re-draw it and try to post it
I would really apreciate that Sam Hain, thats really kind of you.
I’m working on another draft of story notes to post. I wanna say you guys and this website coming back has really motivated and encouraged me to get back on this project, thanks.
You’ve got some interesting ideas going there, Venkman I can certainly see as a somewhat, exccentric radio DJ… could have some fun lines.
Not sure about Dana being romantically involved with Peck… but some sort of inclusion keeps the status quo of the movie cast intact.
Teen boppers. Everyone hates them, the fresh faced go-getters of the generation who are impossible as likely candidates.
That, and over-emphasis of other 80s things, the films were pretty tuned down in regards to the stuff we saw, clothing and vehicles were a little dated but hardly impossible in this day and age… you didn’t see any bright, exaggerated colours and you shouldn’t go for a stereotypical 80s scene. (If that makes any kind of sense). Apart from that… keep the equipment practical, even if it has an updated/revised/reimagined design.
I’m still ironing out the details to the Venkman/Barret/Peck relationship. And if you look back at the first film, the whole feeling of the 80s was very tame and subtle. I really respect that cause it gives it a timeless feeling, kinda like the original Exorcist, that the style of it is distinct yet dated.
And when it comes to the whole Teeny-Bopper thing, let me just say how much the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (a film very close to my heart being a proud Austinite and cult film follower) fcking pissed me off. It’s a good example of what I hate and what I vow never to do. They took a classic milestone in the history of film and turned it into Friday The 13th Part Whatever: Jason kills some cliche teenagers again! Every possible stupid cliche and stereotype a fcking hack could think up and put it in a big budget movie.
When I write I find it easy to picture possible actors to motivate my charecter development, it’s just a little trick I do to write. And I have a cast picked out (just for the sake of writing, I see this project more likely getting made than Ghostbusters 3 and even thats an impossibility).
