All of us here hate Peck I’m just curious to hear what your first impressions were when you saw the film for the first time and even after that.
When I first saw the film I despised I wanted to beat the guy like I was a Class 10 free roaming vapor and go as far as to rip off his beard. PECK YOU ARE A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SLIME!!!
I hated the way he was condescending to Venkman right off the bat. He didn’t say anything overtly rude but he had this smarmy attitude. Right off the bat he seemed slimy to me, and I’m not talking about ectoplasm.
I see him as a misunderstood champion of the city, county, and state of New York. As a public servant, he was only looking out for the best interests of the community and society that he was employed to help protect. It is more than rational for him to be skeptical of the practices and means of the Ghostbusters, and he was met with nothing but sarcasm, derision, personal affronts, and denial of service when he was simply doing his job in the most polite and professional manner possible. The Ghostbusters themselves admitted to being in possession of unlicensed nuclear accelerators, something that would surely be in the jurisdiction of (at the very least) the EPA as far as governance and regulation. Egon as well was concerned about their ability to maintain the power grid of the containment unit, and we all saw what disaster immediately followed its collapse. Indeed, Mr. Peck was well within his rights to question and ultimately shut down the practices of the Ghostbusters, who were acting out of an admittedly rushed effort to line their pockets by bilking unfortunate victims of paranormal activity.
Simply put: Walter Peck is the true hero of the movie and should be recognized hereafter as such.
I will always see him as Proffesor Hathaway in Real Genius and even then he plays the know it all ass that really makes trouble for the heros. So he plays the part and plays it well and I don’t think he gets enough credit. There has to be a wrench in the gears in any great story, and he is our wrench.
Dude was a jerk of course, but in my opinion after watching as an adult with a level head if either his ego was smaller, or Venkman’s ego was smaller and if both men could have just talked about it I feel like most of the 2nd half of the movie could have been different. But where’s the fun in that!?!? On a side note William Atherton really is a nice guy.
When I hung out with him a couple weeks ago he was really great to deal with, except when he didn’t get his banana and doughnut. I think it’s just because he’s good at playing that type of character…
Yeah, I, too heard he wanted those two things, but I didn’t see him pitch a big fit about it. Maybe I missed the majority of the tantrum? He was really gracious with the fans, I noticed.
