Fisher-Price rips off Kenner's RGB H2O Ghost!

I was in Target recently and what caught my eye was positively startling. Fisher-Price has a toy line called “Imaginext”. They have a particular toy which is a 99% ripoff of H2O Ghost from the RGB first line, right down to the color and number of eyes on each “piece”. The only thing it doesn’t do is squirt water (that I know of).

I don’t know if a FP toy designer was paying tribute or unknowingly pulling ideas from his awesome RGB-filled childhood, but the similarities are striking.

Anyway, I thought this was more than interesting, and I wanted to share.

Wow, that is a strikingly similiar product. Did you pick one up, or did you leave it be? I wonder the impact of something like this.

When I touched it, it burned my hand. I did not get one.

Kenner did get bought out years ago by Mattel, who owns Fisher Price.. I wonder if the molds were dug up, are just being repurposed?

I saw those, and there are a number of creatures n the series. Maybe someone can spot the rest of them?

Hmmm.. correction.. Kenner was bought out by Hasbro, NOT Mattel.

Thats does make one wonder…

Nah… the monster did have enough differences, it’s clearly not made from the H2O Ghost mold.

Good spot. I couldn’t really tell the size, but that would be a relatively cheap new fill-in for the Mattel 6 inch line to bust. Thinking about it - that would actually make a pretty neat side-by-side pic: Kenner RGBs busting H2Ghost and the Current Mattel GBs busting this thing. Question is - can I find my old H2Ghost?

The new ghost is roughly the same size… maybe a tiny bit bigger.

but you can say there cut from the same cloth very similar.

I thought they were plastic or rubber?

Whoops… just noticed this thread after posting one just like it. My bad! : P

You’d be hard pressed to argue anything more than superficial similarities.

“They’re blue… and they’re monsters… aaaaand… they have teeth?”

…aaaaand the top one has two eyes, a serious overbite, 'finger-like" appendages, and fits over the other one…which happens to have one eye, feet and a gaping wide mouth.

Please, tell me you didn’t lose the top half of your H2O ghost.

Well, if you’re going to stick to things like facts and reality…

The top does put it more in line with the new toy, but again, after 22 years, and the original company is dead, it’s still not enough to claim rip-off. I’m not even sure why anybody cares…

I never owned one. I was at the learners license age more than RGB toys age when it came out.

Personally, I wouldn’t go as far as to claim it as a total rip-off, but there’s obviously some inspiration there from the H2Ghost. I’m just sayin you have to admit the resemblance is extremely striking.

As for why anyone would care…well, we are communicating on a GB forum where all things GB are discussed. lol
