what company made the ghostbusters uniforms in the first movie?
Please come up with an appropriate subject for this thread.
A single question mark isn’t going to cut it.
There’s almost no way to find this out. It was one of many government contractors in the late 70’s or early 80’s.
This is actually kind of an interesting question from a professional costuming perspective. It’s no less outlandish than asking a question about the original car and how it came to be Ecto 1.
I can only think of two ways to possibly find the answer.
-
Ask a private collector; one who owns an original screen-used GB uniform if the inside tag is still intact, if so, what does it say?
-
Surely Theoni Aldredge has the answer, but I’m going to take a guess that she wouldn’t be very easy to get hold of. (but then again, you never know.) She’s nearly 80 years old now and is the recipient of two Academy awards and probably twice as many Tony’s for costume design.
Anyway, once costume renderings were done and approved, Theoni and/or her staff probably made the initial search and subsequent purchase of the perfect flightsuit(s).
As a sidenote - The first time I realized that Theoni was the costume designer for GB I was a bit surprised and even impressed.
This would actually be a much harder question to answer, I think. A car you can identify. There’s usually records and references somewhere. People can identify it based on particular parts or shapes. But a flightsuit…that’s gonna be tough. And I’d say it’s very doubtful that a costume designer would remember who made a flightsuit from one movie they’ve done. Not saying it’s impossible, or that it’s ridiculous to ask. Just saying it’s gonna be really hard to find out.
On a somewhat related subject, if you go to ScreenUsed.com and look at their archives, they had a GB2 flightsuit at one time. There’s a picture of a tag on the flightsuit:

Again, it’s not the original movie uniform like you asked, but it’s related. Maybe it’ll be useful to someone else?
Well there you go. A GB II screen used suit and the label is intact. Nice find.
So then, perhaps my first suggestion above might well answer the question regarding the original Ghostbusters suit.
The way they worded the history of the company, it seems they have been in existence for 22 years. That indicates that they didn’t provide the flight suit for the first film.
Still, here’s a quote from their website that includes GB affiliation:

If you think about it, threads and threads exist here regarding duplicating the GB uniform as accurately as possible. Finding the origin just seemed an interesting detail question.
Agreed. Much easier to track down info on a car.
Oh, and sheesh, if Theoni recalled the original manufacturer off the top of her head, I’d hand her a cookie. : )
feels like an investigative reporter
I think I’d hand her a cookie shop.
