We completed 3x GB1 costumes for our little group, but it would not have been possible without all the great advice and tips found on this site. Thanks all! This is a pic of us at the Pagan Ball event at Castello Di Amorosa
Awesome photo, looks like you guys did a great job! I take it those suits are dyed?
Thanks. Yes dyed. 2 packets of dry Rit Pearl Gray dissolved in hot water in measuring cup and added to a standard front loading washer with wash cycle set on hot. They are now mostly gray in color from their original khaki, but in the right light you can still see a bit of khaki.
We were trying to match the theatrical look of the flight-suit color under the lighting conditions of the action scenes such as the Gozer battle so they are more gray than they otherwise would be if we were just referencing the publicity stills.
Well you did a damn fine job, thanks for the details. I’ve been too scared to dye mine until after Halloween for fear of unevenness but I’ll be trying it after.
Just to be clear, I added the dye from the measuring cup into the tray where detergent goes just as the machine started up. I didn’t just pour the dye into the washing machine directly.
I’ll probably be researching it a lot more before I attempt it but that’s good to know. Thanks!
The whole setup looks great!
What type of suits did you use? There is a thread about dying nomex and it worked for some and not for others. I tried dying my nomex and it only slightly took the grey but only slightly.
Same here. I’ve got a great, broken in Nomex from another member and as much as I want to grey it up, I’m hesitant for that reason. If Joe got that result out of the same suit, I’d feel a bit better.
Suits aren’t grey, they are khaki.
Yes, they are. But due to film stock and lighting in the first movie, they look grey. Personal preference if you want they to be true khaki or to look like they did on screen, more grey than khaki. There are already lots of debates on this.
Haha, trust me, Don knows all about that. He’s the one who actually gave me the great deal on mine (thanks again!).
That said, I understand where you’re coming from as growing up I always remembered them grey for the various lighting reasons. So in my head I’m sort of torn…go with what my brain/eyes see or real world accurate. The first thing I thought when I saw Joe’s pic was “damn, now THAT is what I remember”. I may just leave mine as is and save up for the custom Gibson & Barnes.
The flight suits are CWU 27/P TRU-SPEC and they consist of 65% Polyester and 35% Cotton. The suits took the RIT dye pretty well considering the large amount of polyester.
I’m aware that Khaki is the true color, but we decided to go with the color most people who have seen the movie think the color of the flight suits are. And yes, I’m also aware that even in the movie there are some scenes that show the flight suit as khaki colored. It’s just that the gray tint feels to us to be more like the on-screen Ghostbuster color than stock khaki.
Those look awesome! But I think the guy in the middle just shat
Great Job!! You guys look awesome! Good wine there too! ![]()
No no no. They are not costumes. They are uniforms. ![]()
Great job!
