GB1 Goggle Strap - Front / Top Strap snap - picture hanger?

Hey all! Think I might have something here! Re-watching GB again last night, and noticed what I think is the correct way of fastening the top strap to the goggles.

It looks like the front snap doesn’t go into the top strap directly - I believe there is a D-ring hanger assembly (resembling the correct NVG headstrap fitting, but in metal). Two rivets side by side fix the D-ring to the top strap.

Strap material may be black heavy weight cotton webbing.

This type:

No grabs, sorry (no DVD drive in this laptop), but look at the Chapter 12 of the DVD, at the Sedgewick, when Ray finds Peter slimed.

On the line “Great! Actual physical contact!” you can clearly see the ring, and make out the rivets. Also visible when Ray throws down on Slimer.

If someone can post pics, that’d be great.

Well, looking at the HD screen caps from the Proton Pack forum, I could only fine one picture that kind of shows what you are talking about:

I don’t see any kind of D-ring in the picture but I do see the 2 rivets on the strap, like you mentioned. I just wanted to post this to validate some of what you are talking about. Hopefully someone can get a better grab from the Venkman being slimed scene.

If needed, you can open the picture in a new window to zoom in a little to see it better.

Thanks man! At least I know I’m not nuts! :vinzclortho:

Blew up that shot, and also raided the HD grabs too. You can make out the curve of the D-ring through the strap.

Nice side shot of the D-ring (strap looks a lot like black cotton webbing here):

Good top view shot (compare the size with the snap on the MT500 holster). Folded metal D-shape:

Could be screwed to the goggles, rather than a snap?

It’s easier to see this detail in the scene where Ray is looking down at Peter after he was slimed, as you mentioned. There’s definitely not a snap on, though it also doesn’t look to have a screw. It could be epoxied on, but I wouldn’t think that would be overly secure.

I’d also note that the D-ring you show as an example is different than the one on the goggles (though you may only have been showing a quick example). That particular one is use for Luke’s lightsaber in A New Hope though.

Thanks namebrand!

Yeah, I couldn’t find a correct D-ring pic, so just used that one. Looks like the ‘bracket’ should be an inch wide (25mm) or so?

Pretty sure of the ‘rounded corner’ D-ring rather than the more usual ‘sharp’ kind.

Maybe it’s riveted on there? Just rounded over the bottom ‘pin’ part of the snap through the metal, as a snap might pop undone?

Could explain why it looks smaller than a standard pop / blind rivet.

Actually, after checking over some more of the HDTV screen caps I took, it does sort of look as if there might be either a black socket cap screw or possibly a socket button screw. Either way, I wouldn’t want to remove the snap on my real NVG frames…I have been meaning to make an accurate set of straps though since the ones I made long ago were mostly just meant as a temp solution.

looks like the bottom corner of the frame is snapped off here by his eyebrow? Could that mean they used resin casts of the frames and not metal ones?

There actually are no “metal ones”, the real frames are made of plastic.

Here’s a couple I found which are similar:

the fact that you can see the hole of the folded metal part that holds onto the ring almost makes it seem like there is no screw or anything, like its just glued on or something, but yeah, cant see that being very secure… either that or its one of those black hex bolts like on the packs..that could be the tiny nub you see in that spot on the side view photo.

It’s very similar, if not identical, to the D-ring on the pommel of the Luke ANH lightsaber. I must have a dozen of the things in my greeblie bin.

Nice find, gunna use the D ring method on my goggles
