Ghost Sniffer Tutorial - *UPDATED*

Hidee Ho. King of the insignificant prop universe here. I whipped up a Ghost Sniffer over the holidays, and decided to take photos while making it. It’s no work of art, but it may help out some of us poorer folk, ones like me who have A.D.D. and can’t finish jack.

These plans are actually an offshoot of something I read over Ghostbusters.net by someone named mb980480? (So, wherever you are mb980480, this Bud’s for you.) Feel free to improve upon my plans, though. I fully intend to, myself.

-------------------------ORIGINAL POST----------------------------------------

Hey, guys. I’ve been thinking about making a ghost sniffer prop. (I know that it’s really a Scott Bacharach Co2 sniffer Model 300, but I don’t have $2000 lying around my house.)

So what I devised is taking a suitable case (such as a ratchet set case), dumping out the contents, spraying it gloss black, print up some labels to stick to the side, and then drill two holes in one side of it.

Then I would take a clear hose (or was it black?) and thread it through the two holes on the side. On one end, I would attach an inflation bulb (the kind you find on blood pressure bladders), and on the other I would place a garden spray hose, because they look similar to the thingamajig on the Co2 sniffer.

All in all, it wouldn’t cost but around $30 total, even less if I find donor parts for free, etc. What do you guys suggest?

P.S. I could further define the entry and exit points on the case by placing a coaxial cable or similar fitting thst the hose could go through to give it a more realistic look.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I thought of taking one of those small electic bicycle pumps that you find at Sears and making one out of that, but I haven’t found the time yet.

Is the device Venkman use on his first visit to Dana?s apartment??

Yes. Even though he seemed to not know how to operate it. snicker

I might have seen the kind you were referring to, today, actually, as I was going through a department store. The one I saw was made by Campbell-Hausfield and weighed a TON, lol. So if you were going to make it out of that, you might have to gut it first, which would be an ordeal. It does have the correct shape, though.

On another note, I saw a plastic version that might work at Toys ‘R’ Us: it’s a K’Nex Model Builders Set that comes in a box about the same breadth and scope as the Bacharach. It was $10, and the great thing is: I could give all the toys inside to my nephew!

The pump I was talking about weighed a few pounds. But the K’Nex idea would work too.

I changed the title of this post, because now I’m trying to figure out what the label on the side of the Bacharach 300 says. I have a few pics, but they are of poor quality, and enlarging them to try to read the text doesn’t do diddly.

I don’t suppose anyone has a sniffer lying around they can read off to me? heh heh

Geez, I must be king of the insignificant prop universe.

I have recently acquired a Bacharach Sniffer 302. If you still need some labels, I can take better pictures of the labels for you.

Hope these help…

You BET they do! You are awesome. Never knew it was dark green- it looks black in the movie, and light green on the pic within this site. That clarifies things. Also, I would never have guessed that there was a label on the underside. I’m sure I speak for the entire Ghostbusting community when I say THANKS (right guys?? here, here!)
