Ghostbusters (2016) box office predictions

It’s raised a LOT of controversy - but how about what really matters to the studio - the box office numbers?

I think

US opening weekend - $29 million

US total gross - $67 million

worldwide total gross $230 million

Forbes has already put out a couple of articles predicting big things for the box office. It’s polling as most anticipated comedy so I think it’s going to make more than those numbers easily. All will depend on if they deliver. If it’s an ok movie I see $400 million and if it turns out to be great $600 million. That’s WW, by the way. If it turns out to be another BvS then it’ll all be dependent on marketing and the opening weekend.

Then there are rare instances of Jurassic World that you can’t predict. But I highly doubt we’re going to see a F4ntastic situation.

It’ll make money, not huge but money. Probably enough to warrant a sequel. I don’t think it’ll be JW situation. There’s too much negativity out there working against it. Plus alot of general audience people not in the know may be disappointed when they learn that the original actors aren’t their characters. I’ve mentioned that to a few people and they were disappointed by that fact. Also let’s not forget that the new Trek comes out a week later and the Suicide Squad. Trek will do well because of franchise familiarity and Suicide Squad because of curiousity. Especially if the reshoots capture half of the Deadpool vibe.

Here in Australia it probably won’t do well. The general public wont flock to see it because its Ghostbusters. 50% of the leads are basically unknowns here (McKinnon n Jones), nobody really likes Kristen Wiig anymore and many consider McCarthy to be the new Sandler (Spy n Boss didnt do well here).

Plus add to that no advertisment.

The only up coming movies being advertised in Australia at the moment are Independence Day, X-Men, Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad.

$1 domestic.

$2 worldwide.

Not since the last action hero would I expect numbers so low.

Man. Last Action Hero was awesome too!

Not exactly shattering any stereotypes associated with the reboot opposition crowd.

To be fair, he’s predicting exactly 3 more dollars than most would.

I use The Amazing Spider-Man example to explain how well the reboot movie and it’s probable sequel will do.
