GHOSTBUSTERS: CON-VOLUTION! Out June 23rd

Some of the best episodes of the original cartoon had the guys reaching a solution through the absence of their regular equipment.

My initial reaction from the five-page PDF preview that was recently released left me in a degree of trepidation. The cartoon had established the idea that Ray was a comic nerd, so the concept laid down in Con-volution is a familiar one… but I admit, I found Ray’s… ferocity a tad abbrasive… that such a happy-go-lucky guy seemed to become a bit of a “comic jerk”, that being said… I can relate to that very conduct, in both my own toing and froing, and in documented cases at other conventions.

Other bits that led to my feeling were the aforementioned line of Egon’s during the panel… and Winston asking if Bancroft drew “brothers”.

I admit that although I bought the comic online after reading the preview, I was torn about the few issues that stood out to me.

I’m pleased to say despite that though, after getting to read the full story, that I enjoyed it. The guys in Ghostbusters costumes was equal parts amusing as it was genius. Seeing as such a thing had been utilised for one of the covers for the story, we probably should’ve known it’d somehow be worked into the story. The comedy in that is definitely due to how many of us take part in it… an intentional ribbing at our part. Well played.

And the dollar figure isn’t that far off from the real thing, really.

Egon’s taunting of Bancroft’s spirit nicely ties into something that’s been established for a while with ghosts, their being tied to strong emotional states… and Bancroft’s ego must be considerable.

Peter and Winston’s confrontation obviously never stood a chance, but was an amusing diversion… although our prop replicas on the whole hold together much better than the one Venkman was saddled with

Aside from a few bits, the story, and especdially characterisation werre good. The series started rocky, but IDW have chosen well since then with selecting their creative teams. I admit that the art isn’t my preffered style, but I still enjoyed Mr. Howard’s work, whereas previous one-shots in this series have been criticized for not making Ray and Venkman unique enough from each other, each buster here is clearly differentiated, yet still recognisable, and the equipment is accurate enough.

Oh, and that scene with Egon and the pencil? Nice work on Egon’s reaction, and subsequent “facepalm”.

The only remaining gripe I have, is the use of “Ectomobile” over “Ecto-1”… Trivial, I know… but hey, I’m a comic jerk.

Nice work guys.

I liked it.
I’m enough of a comic geek that I suspect the Frank Bancroft/Karl Miller “feud” is an exaggerated version of Jack Kirby’s collaboration with Joe Simon (and maybe a bit of the later Kirby/Stan Lee days). And like Kirby, Bancroft is tough as nails. I could so see Jack coming back from the Other Side to kick some ghost ass.

I guess we also now know who Len Wolfman’s Golden Age counterpart was.

I wondered how long it would take for Josh Howard to make an in-joke to his own comic series, and didn’t have to wait long: The guy signing copies of “Bad @ 17” greatly resembles the caricature of Howard, creator of Dead @ 17. He didn’t get to draw Janine in this story, but he did get in a few cute fangirls. And is that the Comic Book Guy on page 3

The juxtaposition of Venkman, and then Egon, nodding off to strangely similar dreams was hilarious. If I were Venkman, I’d use this for bribe material “■■■■ me off, and I’ll tell Janine what you said about ‘fungal morphology’…”

I’ve hung around at GBFans long enough to have seen the type of prop makers being made fun of here, so that was probably the highlight of the issue. I also find it funny that in all of that Venkman never said “How great could these prop flight suits be? They don’t even have nametags!!!”
I would definitely not mind more Ghostbusters stuff from this creative team.

Really enjoyed it. The parts by far were Egon’s dream and his taunting of the spirit. I was laughing my arse off at the latter.

Necro! I read it back in July, and it wasn’t too bad. I liked it better than my husband did.

I agree that Ray seemed a little out of character, and the ending seemed abrupt. Also, it kind of felt like it was making fun of comic book fans with a bit more vitriol than any comic book has a right to do. I’ll have to look for specifics, but I remember that, while I was reading it, I kept saying, “Well, that’s a little mean!”

Loved the idea of a dead comic book writer coming back to the con, though. Reminds me of the “Ghost of Honor” some SF&F cons do (including my favorite con).

Heya, SGG! Thank you very much for the good words about the comic!

And btw, I guess that would make Keith and I self-loathing - we’re both HUGE comic book fans

Jim!
