Being a fan of the new idw comic series and always the love for a challenge I embarked on a new project with a friend of mine as my cohort I began construction on a new style of pack. We all love the classic’s but its been done a million times right?
I like something that has not really been done a lot so I figured id give it a go. I had no issue when I did my egb pack so I figured everyone loved the last 3 egb packs ive done so maybe this one will get some love as well. but enough with the story on with the friggin show!
Mind this is a WIP and this will be used as a buck.
the entire construction is made of MDF (medium density fiberboard) the only thing I swear by.
I started with my base which I later shortened I based my measurement’s off of the vest that the artist based the design off of which again was gain by help of my cohort jermery marks.
After much priming and sanding this is where I am at this moment.
More details are still needed to be added before the molding process can begin.
I will be casting these in one piece and layering the outside in a gel coating so these will not even require painting before assembly.
And of course it would not be complete without the blaster.
Keep up with the build progress along with many others at Twisted Toads Props
Which edges, all in general or just the outer corners? I wanted to give it a nice clean look to it as if it were factory made not quickly put together so I made the points quite crisp, except for the side vent box.
Largely around the edge (the lid looks spot on), I wouldn’t imagine the edges would be as sharp - softer ones would allow for easier mass production and handling.
I’d say go which ever edge type you think looks best. I think the actual Apple product the pack is based on has rounded edges to make it easier to handle for consumers. That being said the pack is like 2-3x the size of the real life product:
These will be cast and made fiberglass pulls then a mobo will be attached and tabs will be attached to the mobo to slide into the correct MOLLE vest the design was based on in the comic.
In the home stretch now before the molding, got all the detail work finished. I’m redoing the side vents to get the up to perfection standards the body has been given a gloss coat to help give a harder finish to smooth before it gets a silicone bath.
