I’ve floating around the boards for while here, but I wanted to finally take the time to introduce myself.
The name’s Devon. I’m currently hunkered down in Redwood City, California where I work for Electronic Arts doing QA, Production.Writing. My last project (aside from testing the horrible G.I. Joe cash-in) was as Co-Writer and Assistant Producer on Dead Space: Extraction – which should be hitting store shelves this month.
Ghostbusters was the first movie I ever saw and has been ingrained in my subconscious ever since.
When I was a bit younger, I was pretty active on GB.net – remembering when Chad took over the boards for Bill Emkow and even the ‘Red Ketchup’ fiasco that gave us the best GB comics to date. Hell – Dan Amrich.Elektro was basically the rosetta stone that bridged my passions together.
Ghostbusters is also my dirty little secret. It’s hard to be taken seriously in my industry when you display outward fanaticism for a particular entertainment medium – especially when you’re a professional writer.
But fans think differently – Lucasarts almost enslaves them now. EA is a company just catching on. Little do they know that the skills I learned imagining and arguing the function of Proton Pack parts and theories proving Kryptonians are photosynthetic humanoids are the same skills that I apply to weapon descriptions.
Luckily for me, aside from also working in the game industry, my fiancée also does spokesmodel work at comic book conventions and tradeshows (Supergirl, Emma Frost, Harley Quinn). I usually accompany her and she’s started ragging on me for not wearing a costume.
To make an already long post just a little shorter – she opened a Pandora’s Box.
I’m bookmarking links, looking at your packs, buying parts and props as fast as I can afford them.
I look forward to weighing in on convos and showing enthusiasm for all your brilliant work from now on – instead fo lurking in the shadows.
Great story. What was your screen name on GBN / GB Homepage?
It sounds like you have a pretty fun career setup. If we ever can persaude you, Ghostbusters Fans is setup as a Wiki-style site and is open for editing!
My screennames were Stantz25/Stantz26 (very original).
Wiki-format eh?
I basically live in the wikis we use at work to maintain story details.
Consider my arm twisted
Starting to do reacquaint myself with most of the lore – just picked up the RGB box set and started tearing through some XGB episodes.
There was a fantastic article I found on the boards ages ago that outlined the reality-based fringe science that Ghostbusters mythos and technology is based around.
If it’s not already somewhere on the board - I’d love to take a stab at it in a more permanent place such as the wiki.
My big focus right now is finishing 4 new GB Uniforms before Halloween. My buddies have gotten almost more immersed than I am – sharking eBay bids for MT500’s (success) and looking at slime recipes.
I blame the game
It’s gotten to the point that THEY’VE started talking about opening a franchise – which is awesome due to our proximity to Hitchcock-staple Bodega Bay (trivia: The Santa Rosa Police Department is the emergency response sent to help the survivors in ‘The Birds’).
While this isn’t exactly the appropriate venue AJ – have you thought about making a page similar to the user profiles specfically for franchises? GBI seems to be slowly dying – and consolidating everything into a web 2.0 format seems like an awesome way to go.
Wish we had the time and resources to build ourselves, but supporting your guys’ work means more – it seems like half the builders that started have retired – most of the top dogs seem to be in their 20’s and early 30’s these days (torch-passing indeed).
But supporting a group that has taken gear building from a science to an art is far more rewarding to me.
People who can’t paint buy paintings – they just (usually) don’t take credit for it.
That said – my first acquired piece is a beautiful completed resin trap from Nick-A-Tron. the exchange rate was far from in my favor – but it’s been worth every penny. I’ll be sure to post pics once it’s in my hands (though it can be seen on his page now).
We also picked up a couple pairs of Ecto Goggles from Crusader X. Beautiful.
We’re planning to build at least 2 shell packs starting in Jan (look out kit vendors!).
