Headlamp or penlight, which light is better for camping ?

I am going to a camping trip next month and I want to buy a camping light. Convenience and light weight are the most important features , headlamp or penlight, which is better ? Which kind of camping lights are you using ? my friend are using the heavy professional camping torch, but I don’t want a heavy one .

Here are they:

If you can afford it buy both.

I would have to agree. I had an LED head lamp from when I went hunting. Ended up carrying my flashlight with me as it was brighter. (BTW don’t expect much in the way of brightness from either of those. Generally speaking cheap = dim, expenssive = bright. Gotta keep lumens in mind, etc.) The pen one especially. At that price, imagine trying to use a basic off the shelf LED from Radio Shack as a flashlight…

Coleman lamp? Bundle of wood and a fire pit? Headlamps are hard to beat for convenience! Go to Rona or home Depot and get the one that works on three AA’s or at the very minimum, get one that operates on AAA’s…unless you have an over abundance of watch batteries at your disposal! I would not recommend a penlight for camping!

The problem I see with the headlamp you posted is the chincey hinge…that thing will break the first time it is dropped, but at that price it probably doesn’t matter. The headlamp I have was maybe 30 bucks (I bought it for work) and the battery pack is on the back of the strap with a cable going to the lamp which balances out the weight.

For puttering around camp you can’t beat a headlamp. You want both hands free when cooking or collecting extra firewood.
